Why are there so many fake accounts?

Is there some sort of profit motive i am not aware of? Could someone explain to me how it works?

I am curious as i haven't really noticed this before on too many other websites. I do belong to a couple MMA websites and the UFC has paid employees posting pro UFC opinions on many stories relating to fighter pay and fighter treatment. There was even an email leak to the media a few years ago between UFC management and their shills on how best to sell a certain narrative, so it's documented that they do employ that tactic, posing as fans.

Depends on where and what kind. I'd guess that the "average" RJ fake account is probably there to scam guys via PM like some sort of ostensibly gay Nigerian prince. I think some even do it just for pics and fake relationships.

Not sure if that's what you're talking about though.

Probably many reasons. For those with more than one account, they may include:

    - Anonymity

    - People ignore their main account because of their past behavior and they want to get more attention.

    - Troll

    - Too much free time on their hands.

    - Control issues - a feeling that they can influence more people by making it look like more people feel the way they do. Or they may feel that they can more easily manipulate people into thinking the way they do by showing extremist view points of the opposite way they believe to be true.

So I guess what it generally comes down to is manipulation.

I have seen naked pics from people on here on Tumblr or ones lifted from tumblr and made into fake pages, thats why I will not do any nude pics of me, don't want anything being used elsewhere, I have seen a couple naked pics of people I actually know on tumblr so no one is immune to it. Maybe that is one of the other reasons for having fake profiles, so they can befriend people who previously may have been ignored by a different profile so another one is made to gain the trust and then pics are copied,
Do people make money from posting pis on tumblr

I can't make up my mind which ones are more entertaining, the annoying, offensive, ignorant assholes who are trolls or the ones who aren't.

I received a friendly message from a guy yesterday. I told him I was surprised he had only one profile pic. He sent me a couple more pics of himself/a German bodybuilder I used to follow on Instagram. I just laughed to myself.

This site would benefit from better moderation and newer forum software that ties it more closely to an outside service like Facebook or Gmail to prevent that kind of thing from happening. As much as I would personally hate that kind of crap, the state of things here are examples of why few other websites do this kind of thing anymore without those kind of identification checks.

Moderation is such a tricky issue. I doubt i would enjoy this site as much if that were to be the case.

There only seems to be one or two posters that are just plain insulting often enough to warrant some reining in.

I think just getting a handle on the fake accounts would be good.

There are message boards that have volunteer moderators and it works pretty well most of the time. Moderators should not be there to control. They should just be there to make sure that people stick to the terms in the agreement of using the site.

Of course but they often do. Especially when they are quick to declare any joke or point they don't understand as racist or sexist or some other moral high ground position they can assume.

I've also seen a lot of moderators warn or even ban people simply for defeating them in an argument. They get angry because they are losing a debate or not winning one and then suddenly the argument ends with the moderator just choosing to ban someone for disagreeing with them.

It's especially easy to ban people you disagree with, when you accuse them of being racist or sexist or islamaphobic. I just don't like the idea of censorship online. Especially in a changing culture, one that changes so fast. 5 years ago i had never heard of a "social justice warrior" and now it seems like there is an army of them. I can only guess or imagine at what topics might be off limits for debate or discussion in 20 years.

Yeah, it might work if the moderator was some sort of artificial intelligence robot that actually understood what people wrote, but good luck with that. Otherwise we're stuck with human moderators with human emotions and all that can go wrong with that.
