Dog bites man - not news. Man bites dog - news. Alert me when they sign a joint declaration acknowledging same sex marriage as equal in dignity to gay marriage.

As an aside: The Orthodox have the coolest garb. Love that missile helmet.

Still depressing: I mean there are more important things for them to worry about.

Sam27 saidLet's not forget about our Saints Sergius and Bacchus! They both were gay men, I believe the Orthodox and Catholic leaders are living in denial.

It's not that they are in denial they are just asking the same thing they require of all their members - chastity. For married members chastity is no sex with anyone other than your marriage partner. For those who take a vow of celibacy that means sex with no one. For single members that means no sex until you're married. For gay members that means no sex until you're married (in the church) with a member of the opposite sex - in essence, never. There are some gay people of faith who can accept this teaching. I for one cannot.

I also do not think it fair to attribute a sexual relationship to Servius and Bacchus. None of us living knew them nor were they caught in flagrante dilecto.

two bigots, especially the Orthodox Patriarch who took the corruption in the church to the new stratospheric ("heavenly" in their interpretation) level
I guess they just could not agree on anything else so they decided to use their usual whipping boys the gay people
Just a note for those of you who thought Francis was any different...

How appropriate that they chose to make their condemnation in Cuba, the former Pearl of the Antilles. Who'll be the next to rush off for the Workers' Paradise, all red starry-eyed and full of naive optimism just waiting to be crushed by the oppressive reality of that regime?

Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders praised Pope Francis Thursday for his speech calling for action on climate change and poverty, and for highlighting the accomplishments of Catholic socialist Dorothy Day.

Sorry. The glue of Socialism is stronger than any gay rights.

But it's hard to see how it can last. The final split between the two churches occurred over three words, known as the filioque; they are, "and the son". There has even been blood spilled over those three words. Thousands of soldiers had their eyes gouged out over those three words.

    The game of politics.

It's a tit-for-tat thing. The Russian could have told Francis they could meet but with conditions.

One of them would be issue some form of gay-bashing, mainly for Russian consumption.

So this Patriarch looks like he can negotiate a deal and gets more popular home.

Also Francis has to make a balance between his progressive views and a group where majority are not progressive.

This statement is not to be welcomed, but the bigger picture might be.

What progressive views? Francis has views of woman and gays from 1600. Progressive? He is for gas powered cars? He thinks leaches don't work? He actually thinks, which Jesus and the unknown writers of the Bible apparently did not, that the Earth might actually rotate around the sun?

Francis is a progressive thinker? He thinks he is the son of God. Literally, Jesus in human form. Jeezus
