Half of black gay men in U.S. will contract HIV, quarter of Hispanic men (CDC)

    This is tragic.

Daily BeastHalf of gay and bisexual black men and a quarter of gay and bisexual Hispanic men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetimes, the Centers for Disease Control announced in a first-of-its-kind study on Tuesday.

While the lifetime risk of a positive HIV diagnosis has fallen from 1 in 78 Americans overall in 2005 to 1 in 99 today, the decline has not been distributed equally among the U.S. population. For the foreseeable future, the CDC estimates that gay, bisexual, black and Hispanic people will continue to bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic. The new study is the first time that the CDC has estimated lifetime HIV risk based on race.

Overall, the CDC projected that one in 64 men and one in 227 women in the United States will be diagnosed with HIV at current rates. For black and Hispanic people, however, that risk increases dramatically.

Regardless of sexual orientation, one in 20 black men and one in 48 black women will be diagnosed with the virus that causes AIDS in their lifetimes, according to the CDC. For Hispanic men and women, the risks are one in 48 and one in 227, respectively.

White people have the lowest chance of an HIV diagnosis, with an overall lifetime risk of less than one percent. Gay and bisexual white men still have a lifetime risk of one in 11, though.

The CDC’s projections are based on data about HIV diagnoses and death rates collected from 2009 to 2013, and they assume that rates of new diagnoses remain constant. If that’s the case, one in six men who have sex with other men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetimes.

“These estimates are a sobering reminder that gay and bisexual men face an unacceptably high risk for HIV—and of the urgent need for action,” said Dr. Eugene McCray, director of the CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention. “If we work to ensure that every American has access to the prevention tools we know work, we can avoid the outcomes projected in this study.”

This is going to sound horrible, but I once briefly dated a black guy while I was living in the US... he was a great guy and hot too, but I kept getting told by friends that I could get a "hotter" black guy - ie hotter than me. I remember someone mentioned the word "currency" or something incredibly hierarchical. And everyone assumed I was after BBC, even though I was a top. We were turning too many heads at gay places, scrutinized by friends, and eventually I got self-conscious and believed that the "interracialness" of all this was too distracting for a long-term relationship - lol compared to dating a Latino or Asian. Maybe it was a self-fulfilling prophecy because he eventually broke up, citing my perceived issues as obstacles. At no time was HIV even a factor though, strangely.

What I'm gathering from this article is that blacks and hispanics don't use condoms and will fuck raw....Unless you're apart of the reason why, I see no way how this can be predicted.....hmmmmmmm makes me wonder....*suspicious side eye*

Actually blacks apparently have the highest rate of condom use of any racial group. Just not high enough to "beat" HIV

Education, education, education? I wonder what are the numbers for those who know about the statistics and still choose to not use a condom. It is pretty disheartening to see these projections though.

Actually, GBM are more stringent about condom usage. It's just that statistically, GBM only sleep with other GBM which means it more likely they'll be infected. Idk, I'm not a stastician or epidemiologist, all I know is there needs to be more education, public health campaigns, health insurance enrollment, and canvassing in AA and Latino communities.

I mean, why are only 21,000 people on PREP for instance? PREP has the potential to END HIV in 2 or 3 generations, you'd think more gay men would be on it.

Exactly how high is that rate? Do these guys always use condoms? While many gay men use condoms sometimes the truth is if the guy is hot enough and they are horny enough and didn't bring condoms most gay black men, IMHO, will bareback. I can't remember the last time a a sexual partner of mine actually suggested condom use. I always stay quiet during that moment just to see what they will do. I always carry condoms if I'm looking to get laid though.

I was responding to the guy who thought blacks are more unsafe with sex, when in fact the opposite is true. That some guys will bareback with someone hot enough applies to any race lol...

At no point did I say gay black men are more unsafe with sex. You do not know that blacks are safer with sex. At best you can know that black guys report to be safer with sex. You never answered any of my questions. Since all it takes is on unsafe event to contract HIV, what definition of safe are we using? If i bareback 20% of the time am i being safe? If i dont use condoms in a relationship but ive never been tested with my partner am I being safe? I'm asking questions and relaying experiences that I've had. You are saying that a group of people who have an abnormally high rate of HIV infections practice the safest sex. You'd make a horrible scientist and a horrible doctor because you are too emotional, too sensitive to issues of race, and not inquisitive enough.

I also never asserted that other groups don't have unsafe sex as well. If I say oranges are sweet that doesn't mean apples are not.

this looks a small sampling but here's results of one study which might indicate at least one reason for the higher numbers:
    https://www.poz.com/article/condom-misuse-26018-8691
Higher Rates of Condom Misuse or Failure in Black Gay Men

Black men who have sex with men report higher rates of condom breakage and slippage as well as incomplete use of condoms compared with white MSM. Publishing their findings in Sexually Transmitted Infections, researchers studied cross-sectional data of 475 MSM who were members of a cohort study in Atlanta and who said they'd used a condom for insertive sex (being the top) during the previous six months.

No one is going to like what I'm about to say but I'm gonna say it anyway:

If getting fucked doesn't give you, the supposed bottom, an erection, then take that dick out of your ass. This alone will likely reduce infection rates. There is no rule of relationships which says you have to engage in sexual acts which do not turn you on even if just to keep your man.

And tops, you need to stop trying to talk others into doing acts which do not come naturally to them. We're gay, we love sex. If we are into something, you won't have to talk us into it. If you have to coerce, to convince then you are in the wrong.

If you are into it--if you are truly a bottom and not "a side" or rather not anally inclined--if you get an erection by getting fucked in the ass, then make sure you rubberize, consistently and properly, your top.

At this point in our history it is hard to find sympathy for gay men who contract HIV after 30 years of warnings. If you want to bareback with strangers then you play Russian roulette.

That sounds incredibly racist to release this kind of information and as I suspect is done for the reason of causing trouble between the races and make people who are black or hispanic have a complex about their ethnicity, I expect this is all fabricated. The Black lives matter thing thats going on in the US I think is also meant as a way to cause trouble and maybe what the government want is to cause a civil war maybe, Hillary seems to be at the forefront of all this crap. We are all equal no matter where you are from or what colour your skin is and we all have a right to live on this planet and one person isn't better than the next.
In the UK there is rarely any trouble between the races of people and the police would be in serious trouble if they discriminate between anyone so it doesn't happen, they could loose their job because of it which is a good thing.
I would be interested in anyone's opinion on my view of this topic

I always use a condom even when in long term relationship. I think I have done everything to be protected from HIV+ but you can also contract HIV from oral even though the chances of having it is extremely slim.

I am usually more worried about getting herpes since you can get one from blow job too. I don't like to give BJ with a condom on.

I think it would be racist NOT to release this information. Do you want blacks and Hispanics not to have this information? If this information causes high risks groups (and all sexually active people) to reevaluate their sexual practices it will have been worth it. If enough (ideally all) high risk people changed their behavior to 100% condom use for all anal and vaginal sex encounters, the infection rates projected by the CDC will plummet for everyone.

Would releasing this info in the UK be considered hate speech?

People having indescriminate sex outside of a committed, monogamous relationship generally do not follow the Church's teachings on human sexuality, so I'm sure condom use will not present any ethical stumbling blocks for them.
