What America Would Look Like Under Sanders’ Socialism

To celebrate the Monthly Labor Review’s centennial, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is taking a look back at the last 100 years. One of the articles in this series — “The life of American workers in 1915” — is eminently fascinating and shows in stark relief just how far we have come in America since then.

Life in the U.S. certainly was not nasty, brutish and short a century ago. But it was almost primitive relative to what we have in front of us today. And it’s the sort of crushing existence that socialism — yes, even Bernie Sanders’ “democratic” version of that poisonous system of government — would take us back to.

    ...

None of the advances we enjoy — take for granted, even — has been brought to us by socialism, not even today’s better working conditions, for which the socialist labor movement takes credit. All have been the products of free-market capitalism. It is the lone system that has the structural incentive — the profit motive — that drives people to produce the advances we’ve seen.

Socialism has the exact opposite effect. It motivates people to live off of others, and requires coercion and force. That’s a plan for disaster, as any reading of the history of the last 100 years will show. It’s not coincidental that the Cubas, North Koreas, Venezuelas, Greeces of 2016 look a lot like the America of 1915.

And that made the rich less rich.
DT wants to "make America great again."
By great, he means rich. The only way to do that is to take more money from people who have less, since there's a finite amount of money to go around.

Sanders panders to the crowd who thinks he's actually on our side. There's not a single candidate running who's out to help the common people financially. Yeah they talk a good game about doing this and that to make life better, but it all boils down to taking more of our money so they can get richer. DT is the only person willing to admit it; and he will most likely be assassinated soon after taking office if that happens (which polls seem to point that direction).

Personally, I'm not even voting in this election. There's no one I consider worthy of running this country.

The rich are not going to get less rich. They'll always have more than they can spend... This is the most misinformed comment I've ever read. I thought you were kidding when I read the first sentence, and I was waiting for a punchline.

    Please, tell me you're joking!!!!

The rich wouldn't be less rich. But the poor would be less disadvantaged. Someone who can't pay for college will be able to make something of themselves. When people get cancer their families won't become homeless.

Not to toot Trump's horn, but he was the only one of the GOP candidates who said if he is president no one will die in the streets. Cruz and Rubio said that makes him weak. They actually think it's okay to have a country where citizens are so poor they just curl up die.

Trump is better than those stooges. But only Bernie can make America great again.

No, there would've been no middle class without socialist policies. If we had a government then like we have today, all the money would've gone to the top. Living wages, laborers becoming homeowners, their children, the baby boomers, growing up privileged in the middle class, all that came from big social programs following the Great Depression. Now the wages and equality people fought for are gone. Those same jobs are now keeping people poor in sweatshops in other countries. Antisocial government programs destroyed black families, to where we say black lives matter like we were sent back to before MLK. Unregulated capitalism allowed crooks to rob us blind while the government went to war on the black community, Clinton calling black youth superpredators, when the real superpredators were on wall street and in Washington.

It was socialism and everyday people standing up for themselves that made America great, not war.

You made me think about socialism. The word having other less agreeable connotations with many Americans. Even getting tangled up with communism, which in the strictest terms it's not.

No, the US American colonial experience gave us something else. When colonists had to survive in a strange wilderness, thousands of miles from their homes, totally on their own. And then later moving across a continent, doing things the people in the Old World of Europe had never done before.

So in inventing this nation, they learned about self-reliance. And relying upon each other. Is that socialism? I would look for another word, because that's an academic term from the Old World, that we left behind. We were a new country, of our own invention.

What would that word be? It's not socialism, that's too rigid and prescribed.

I would simply call it Americanism. Because we invented it, as we created the first democratic republic of its kind on this planet.

So that I'm not a Socialist, nor a Liberalist, or even a Leftist, but an Americanist. Following the same values my ancestors did, back in the 1600s when they first came to this land. You either care for each other, or you all perish together. That's the philosophy I understand.

having no actual competition HELPED too though

I dont understand why americans in particular are so against a FEW more socialist things, they have seemed to embrace a plethora of socialist policies and are quite happy with them.

Army (the largest welfare program in the US)
    Roads
    Schools
Medical Research Labs funded by gov
    Electricity Right of Ways
    Rail Right of ways
    Public parks
    Airline right of ways
    Food Labeling
Money (because bartering all the time kinda sucks)
    Police
    Fire
    Ambulances
    Snow removal
    Garbage Dumps
    Weights and Measures Act
the list is pretty extensive but you dont think about it much..as everyone focuses on a few welfare cases.

    1000000% incorrect.

There is NOT a finite amount of money to go around. The Federal Reserve creates money with the click of a mouse. See: Money Supply.

I wonder how many other people incorrectly believe that there is a finite amount of money to go around.

Of course they can....and make it increasingly worthless too! At which point, the rich stay rich, and the poor get poorer, as each dollar they struggle to earn buys *less*.

Even if you assume an infinite amount of money, there is only a finite amount of "stuff" that can be acquired with it.

The Markham Park Mountain Bike Trail system is 100% funded, built and maintained by a very small dedicated group of volunteer workers. The purpose of The Markham Park Trail Building Fund is to raise awareness and promote the growth of the volunteer group.

Hmm the collective work together for people to ride their trails.
    Isn't that socialist act contradictory?

damn those socialists doing something good for the community. (ironical)

Absolutely! Look at Denmark, Norway and Sweden - complete wrecks. Universal healthcare, free education, rated the happiest countries in the world what a disaster. Or Canada, France, Germany - all highly socialist, at least by our standards, and refugees pouring out every day looking for freedom.

    What a load of garbage.
