I believe Sam Smith is the first openly gay man to win an Oscar, future Jeopardy! question? icon_cool.gif

Twice is nice for Sam Smith. He and songwriting partner Jimmy Napes picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Writing’s on the Wall,” after winning the same honor at January’s Golden Globes.

In an upset, Smith beat out frontrunner Lady Gaga for the win, and went on to dedicate his award to the LGBT community, citing actor Ian McKellen’s recent comments about gay people being underrepresented at the Oscars.

Sam Smith found out he wasn't the first openly gay Oscar winner

Previous gay Oscar winners include screenwriters Dustin Lance Black ( Milk), Bill Condon ( Gods and Monsters), and Alan Ball ( American Beauty), and fellow songsmiths Melissa Etheridge, Elton John, and Stephen Sondheim.

During his acceptance speech, Smith had said, “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day.”
