Why did it matter to the principal that the bullying was because the kid is gay, so what? It doesn't matter why, bullying is wrong and should be stopped. As an informed adult and school administrator he had the duty to provide a safe environment and failed in his duties. My guess is he won't have a job very shortly and the school district will have to review it's policies and go through some training. And of course settle the case.

Sad that this still exists. This is a good demonstration that while we in the lgbt community have come a long way toward acceptance, we still have a long way to go.

Australia has a split personality when it comes to gay rights. The Sydney Gay Mardi Gras parade is broadcast nationally on TV, but they still don't allow same-sex marriage.

Somerville, where this happened, is an outer suburb of Melbourne, which has a huge gay population and even a gay radio station - a friend of mine does a sports show - but it's also the only place on earth where I've ever been publicly taunted by a carload of homophobic assholes while walking down the street in the gay district.

The major cities are on the whole very accepting places, but you don't have to go very far from the city center to find some very antiquated and ignorant attitudes.

It is very similar to the split personality that exists in the US, go figure.
