I've officially had it with NYSC. I'v been looking at Yelp reviews and pretty much every other gym has gotten terrible reviews...so I'm looking for good recommendations. I'm considering David Barton, Crunch, Equinox (a little pricey though), 24 Hour Fitness. I get a corporate discount at David Barton and Crunch. Any good/bad experiences at these gyms? I live in the East Village, so many of them are close.

    Thanks!

If they have weights, you should be good to go.

I had a so so experience with David Barton, their Astor Place location. I felt it was all about style, and that the vibe was not serious. A bit like working out in te lobby of the W Hotel. I joined Blink at Broadway and East 4th and while that location doesn't have a squat rack, just a couple of Smith machines, I love it. Very reasonable, clean, friendly, well maintained.

I used to be a member at The Y at Bowery and Houston. I found it had good workout/gym equipment, a v good pool, and there's a field house if you like to shoot hoops. The vibe there is desperately un-sexy, but the facilities are good.

There's also some kinda down and dirty place on Mulberry at Prince. It's also cheap to join but might be too far out of the way for you.

I need a gym with a squat rack. In fact, a good gym should have several so as to have enough for more than one person to be using one at a time.

I can't do squats anymore. icon_cry.gif I threw out my back really badly and it took 3 weeks to recover. The doctor and physical therapist said no more squats. It sucks, because my legs are stronger than my upper body and I really enjoy a leg workout.

And thanks, guys, for the input (especially on David Barton...I was curious about it but another friend said the people there are "icy" and the pics made it look like a club).

I have heard wild thing about NYSC. One of my friend tells me he would travel from DC to NYC to go to this club. His motivation were not to workout, (at least not with the weights).icon_razz.gif He told me that he would have sex with multiple guys in the locker room/Sauna. He also told me that other guys were doing this too. Consider this if you are serious about going to the gym without distractions and getting a good workouts. icon_twisted.gificon_razz.gificon_redface.gif

blink or Planet fitness are the same other than Blink is owned by Equinox. So it is stylized a bit more. If that is what you want in a gym, style.

I've been going to Barton for about two months. While it is highly stylized in concept, it delvers in equipment and if you want to take a class like yoga, which I do. Not looking to be the prima queen in the gym so "ICY" as a description of the other personalities in not my concern. Though I do like a hi and bye when coming and going from door staff. The late shift guy never says bye unless there is a manager at his side.

I've also heard people complain the the music is to loud. I myself like music loud when at gym, its my white noise and helps me concentrate but it can't be to loud because folks still walk around with there players listening to their own music.

Their limelight location is nice but a little smaller and darker. When I workout there all I think about is about the club scene of days gone by and the ghost of times past that may hunt this dwelling. LOL.

My colleagues at work call Barton the GAY gym. Homophobes act like gay guys don't go to other gyms; dumb asses. At Barton there is a more relaxed and tolerant level of gay people where as at places like Planet fitness people may seem a little more guarded. But if you open Grindr you can quickly assess gay. hahahaha!!!!

well. I Have been in almost every gym in this city ! My conclusion is ... there is no perfect gym, they all lack in something. I'm on 24 fitness for 3 years and they are not as great as they us to be but They never close and it's a plus for me there is few locations i usually go to Soho each is the bigger one, 53 and Lex has swimming pool , sauna , steam room jacuzzi , chelsea is the smaller one. I would recommend you to go and ask for a free pass, most of the gyms has it. thats the best way to decided. If could afford it i would be at equinox each i had enjoyed in the pass. The reality is even them are not perfect, i got the conclusion that there will be not 100% great gym. I hope it helps !

Yes. It's totally true ! THat's the reason i quit there, if you want to have sex that's the place to go, there will be always action on the shower and steam room. The problem is it becomes addiction . Your friend didn't lie !

When I was there last summer I got a week guest pass at the Equinox gym over by Chelsea Market, and I loved it.

Thanks for all of the input, guys. I decided to try Crunch, since it's located close to my old home gym and is a similar price with my corporate discount. It's month-to-month, so if I don't like it I can switch to another gym. I'm already so much happier...the wifi actually works there, they let you have more than two towels, the staff is always cleaning, and the people working out aren't jerks (I've encountered a lot of assholes at NYSC). Crunch also has a number of locations in the city that I can try out. I realized, after finally leaving NYSC, how much I didn't like it...kind of like a when a bad relationship finally ends and you realize how much you'd been suppressing over the years.

I've seen some very hot guys at Crunch. It's tough to not look. I don't even realize I'm checking guys out sometimes...a friend had to point it out to me. The first day there I saw two actors. One I don't like b/c he's a total asshole (encountered him being a dick several times), but the actor, Chris Lowell, is very hot:

Your friend isn't lying, I don't think. I've never seen anything happen in the actual locker room, but a lot goes on in the steam room and sauna. I've seen plenty of things just walking by the sauna.

At what gym is all this sex going on?

The worst most disgusting thing I've ever seen in saunas is guys wearing shoes.

NYSC at Irving Place and the one at 14th, between 5th and 6th Avenues. But it goes on at all the NYSC locations. I rarely see workers in the locker room and sometimes towels would be all over the place and there would be huge towel sculpture in the towel bin. I got a staph infection once and I'm pretty sure it came from NYSC. The gyms are pretty filthy, and the showers are a mess. The final straw for me was when I went to the shower, came back, and found a used adult diaper sitting on the floor in front of my locker. I had to change around it.

I'm so glad I changed gyms. Crunch's employees are constantly cleaning the place, the weights are re-racked by weight, and there's not a lot of stuff cluttering up the floors. I've tried three locations so far. The only thing I don't like is the lighting...it's a little dark for me but that's just personal presence.
