I will be going to New York City in a few weeks. Are there any especially good hotels that you would recommend?

I usually stay with friends in the City, but the Plaza has been good, I would take a full suite. I like its Oak Room for meals, and Bar, and room service was always good. But I haven't been there since they became about half co-ops.

Right around the corner down the street is the St. Moritz, smaller but classy. Of course there's always the Waldorf, which has always been excellent. A factor to consider is your itinerary. Why are you in Manhattan, what will you be doing? Proximity can also be a consideration. And next we can discuss the best gay clubs & bars. And other great things to do in the City.

    Thanks for the above suggestions
I'm going to a wedding, will be traveling solo. No specific plans other than gym, Eataly, and World Trade Center, maybe museums, theater.. Not looking for hook ups but always open to making friends and dating.

There are some excellent bargains to be had at the Waldorf Astoria. The rooms are getting a little tired, but if you book a standard room and then, for a little extra, upgrade to the Waldorf Towers on check-in (as I did recently), you will be very impressed. I ended up with a vertiginous view over Park Avenue and the General Electric Building. It was a great experience.

I'd give vrbo or one of the other airbnb type sites a try. You can get some surprisingly good deals on cool place - like, say, a 40+ floor penthouse on 5th in the East 60s or 70s. Same for the West Village or Chelsea, if that suits you better. Good luck and safe travels!

My favorite in NYC, The Royalton.

Great location, in the heart of the theater district. Part of the Morgans hotel chain. Try to get a fireplace suite room. Large living room w/fireplace, king bed, bathroom with huge sunken tub. really nice.

    Thanks to all
    Feedback:
Radio City Apartments is the best deal, but booked 6 months in advance.
Looking for smaller, so ruled out the Waldorf Astoria and the Plaza
Vrbo better for a couple, penthouse $2,000 a night
Went with the Edison, they wanted to charge me $10 more than the online rate but relented when I objected
    Thanks again

get a $40 subway pass for the week end. find a lower price hotel mid way between the wedding and Times Square. Pick a main line to avoid transfers. The subway might get unsafe late evening. for those evenings take a cab.

For long-term stays (i.e., 5 days or more), I usually get a flat using airbnb and similar sites. You have to do your due diligence and use extreme prudence to find the flat that works best for you, but I've found that I get more bang for my money renting a flat vs. staying at a hotel.

Any suggestions for meeting men who are interested in more than a hook up?

There is a penthouse on Airbnb
    It's $2,000 a night, a little beyond my reach!
    Haven't tried the gay agency.

Plaza is horrible. They've ruined it. Tacky. I don't know who put that travesty together but the place now feels like Qatar. All sloppy money and no taste or restraint. The Oak Bar is still nice but everything else is gone. And the last two times I've tried to go to the Oak Bar it has been closed, once for a private function and the other for no specified reason. Just locked. So I never go anymore. Sad. And all the apartments I've seen carved out are just as bad.

The Carlyle is still great but pretty far uptown. I'll still go there for music. Bemelmans Bar is one of my favorite places in Manhattan, especially on big evenings like Christmas Eve.

Any thoughts on the best gay bars and clubs and other activities in NYC?
