Fuck this. Chopped up my hand last May, overdue tetanus by about 2 years. Tetanus is easily preventable, but you DON'T WANT TO DIE OF IT.

Tetanus and diphtheria are exceedingly rare in the US, but pertussis is relatively common among adults, even tho underdiagnosed. For several years it has been recommended that a booster consist of Tdap [tetanus/adult diphtheria/acellular pertussis vaccine] ] and NOT Td [tetanus/adult diphtheria vaccine]. See for details. Healthcare providers should not be using Td any longer, just Tdap for booster immunizations every 10 years [or less for certain types of tetanus-prone wounds].

A dirty cut may require one. It all depends on the story.

However a tetanus shot or "jab", doesn't protect against other infections.

If you have had 3 or more tetanus injections its needed less. However we often link the Pertussis vaccine with it. There is still a Whooping cough outbreak. So its still a good idea to keep updated especially if traveling.
