Just came across http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-proof-that-men-are-finally-embracing-short-shorts-2015-7 and appreciated the following quote "For most of the past two decades, men's shorts have barely merited the name, dropping so far down the calf that Linnaeus would have stuck them in the pants family. " from the WSJ article that it links to.

Summer (aka shorts season) will be here soon. I was pleasantly surprised to see J Crew shorts with "only" 5" inseam and many selections from Hollister that are "only" mid thigh. I put "only" in quotes because (1) this was the norm of the 80's (and even the 90's) (2) I am only 5"5" and any shorts with inseam > 5" inseam look ridiculous on me. Is it time for me to dig out my OP's from the 80's this summer? I still find them comfortable and functional (OK, it's harder to put an iPhone 6 in an OP pocket). The only drawback is that longer shirts cover up most of the shorts …

Ya, I've had a bunch of shorts hemmed to 8 inches. I'm 6' so that's about half way to my knee. I like the look. Got some Nike workout shorts that are shorter, too, but you have to be careful to not expose yourself-- jockstrap recommended... Bathing suits are getting shorter, too.

I don't like long shorts…. Like, what is the point??? 8" is a good length, or midway on my thighs, and of course a Speedo…. LOL..

But knees are so sinful. icon_rolleyes.gif

I believe shorter shorts are happening when I see them in the streets. My 6" shorts are my favs.

Yes, I think shorts should be short.

Show off the legs if you've got them, otherwise don't do it half-way.

Nothing hotter than a guy with great legs wearing short shorts. Fully embracing this trend

    WTF? "Shorts" = 2" or 3 " inseam. (1" or 0" inseam = Hot Pants.)

And what's this crap about "summer?"

No Long Pants After Easter. No Shirts After Memorial Day.

It's about time. Long shorts make legs look like sticks, unless the guy has big calves. Show me the thigh! icon_wink.gif

Meh, I probably wouldn't, the current square cut type short, took all the extra material out of these retro shorts. One thing I hated about them, if your legs were too skinny to 'fill the leg holes', they looked too big on you and or your junk would show if there was no inner lining, you had to wear underwear or a jockstrap. These were 'one size fits all' since they were mainly worn in gym class

These shorts always looked better on girls cause their thighs were bigger, for me to wear them again, would have to fit the leg opening this time, which should be no problem now, depends on if they are made with stretchy lycra

Shorter shorts can't come back fast enough! As a scrawny guy 5'6" it pisses me off that shorts my size aren't proportionally designed. Inseams tend to be standard sizes and most of the available choices are awful. Board shorts are the worst: they hang at my knees and flare out twice as wide as my body. I swear to God I feel like I'm shopping at Omar the Tent-maker's when I need shorts! icon_evil.gif

Because most American men straight, bi, and gay are such conservative prudes. I would love to see short shorts become very commonplace in the US again but given our conservative, prudish attitudes in this country, I am not holding my breath on this one. Horribly sad but true.

Very short-shorts is what I wore in HS gym class in 1963. I wore extremely brief & snug shorts on the tennis court at that same time. Guys on basketball teams also wore very brief shorts.

And yes, we often works jocks with athletic shorts, because the all-cotton knit underwear briefs of that period were much larger than today and didn't do that good a job of holding your package in place and out of sight during strenuous, sweaty activities.

I've always thought the baggy modern basketball "short" of today looks ridiculous, a close match for women's "bloomers" from around 1900. And I don't care for board shorts in the water, either, unless you really are riding a surfboard.

I always think it looks silly when you see at young pair together at the beach or pool, and she's got this tiny bikini, while he looks like he forgot to finish undressing. What made men so suddenly modest, and women so unashamed, at least in the US? Or do the guys all want us to believe they're really surfers, when not taking a dip in a backyard pool?

As for myself, for practicality I do wear fairly big and loose cargo shorts in the Florida heat. With thin baggy boxers underneath for air flow & coolness. And I love all the big pockets, in today's world of cell phones, earbuds, sunglass cases in my usage, and every kind of crap. But I do prefer my cargoes just above the knee. A few men's catalogs sell shorts by inseam length.

Art^^^^. Cargo's are no longer cool. Ya gotta change your thinking. Go to J Crew and get some new shorts with clean lines and try on different ones for length. They sell three different lengths. You'll look much more modern. And ditch some of that junk you fill the pockets with. You don't need all that all the time.

LOL! Great photo! Half the battle with "cutoffs" was getting the fringe just so. I remember a girl complementing me on mine one summer in HS. Dennis Quade looks great in them in "Breaking Away." Whenever I cut off khakis, I go for a 4-5" inseam depending on how they lie, so yes, bring back short shorts! Guys with nice legs look great in 'em!

I actually like the longer board-shorts that have been around for the past several years. They're comfortable, with plenty of pocket-space for wallets, phone, etc., and I think that guys look good in them. Knee-length shorts are okay, too. And they're cooler, looser, and no underpants needed.

I personally don't care for the appearance of really short shorts. They seem too tight, and don't look comfortable. Those two good-looking guys in the pic above have very little pocket-space, they're going to be sitting on their wallets & cellphones, especially when driving, and they'll probably have sciatica by the time they're 40.

Moreover, there's nothing worse than seeing an overweight elderly guy with varicose-veins wearing short shorts. I remember that from the 60s & 70s, and swore I'd never be seen in public like that. Some guys just don't seem to realize that they've aged & put on a few pounds. Board-shorts are better-looking at that point. I realize that everyone's entitled to dress the way they want, and I'm open-minded, and it really doesn't bother me at all if someone's dressed differently than my own preferences. To each, his own. But as for myself, I prefer the longer board-shorts, and I think that even younger guys look better in them.

^ So what's your point? In the 80s, kids went to class in three feet of snow wearing shorts and flip flops.

I think I'll pop the top and doors off the Jeep tomorrow. icon_smile.gif

I like shorts of various lengths (oxymoron wut lol). And I think a shorter short can look good at the gym, beach, near the beach, or park if it's warm enough to merit it. But a shorter short out and about shopping/doing errands/etc looks desperate and out of place.

In Oz and NZ, shorts of 3" and/or rugby shorts are fairly common around these parts. No one bats an eye and has been part of the wardrobe for decades icon_rolleyes.gif.

I guess in 'murica, this is news.
