MichVBPlayer28 saidI would go to Necto if you enjoy gay clubs. If you're more of a relaxed person, there's lots of other things to do. There's of course lots of local restaurants and bars. My personal favorites when I went to school there are
Chinese: TK Wu (Liberty and State)
American: The Brown Jug (S. University)
Brewery: Ann Arbor Brewing Company or Grizzly Peak
It will still be too cold to really enjoy the Arb (outdoor park) or the Diag (the center of campus) but ya can still walk around campus. It's really gorgeous. You'll of course be on North Campus for your auditions but it's good to get acquainted with the whole city.
If ya don't like gay clubs, you can check out "Aut Bar". It's on Fourth and something, I can't remember off hand. It's just a small gay bar in the city. Nice place, but don't know the popular nights. I used to go on Saturdays.
Best of luck at your audition. I hope you get in, the music school is really great. I have lots of friends who graduated from there.
Personally I prefer the Chinese at Asian Legends (E. Williams and Thompson). You should also try Mongolian Barbecue (Main and Washington). I find that I'm missing Za's a lot (E. University and S. Universtiy). It's cheap, tasty and has many choices (pasta, pizza, salads, subs etc).
You should definitely walk around the Diag. Even in winter, it's awesome. Visit the bell tower and the Michigan Union. On North Campus where the music school is, you can check out Pierpont Commons and the North Diag with its own bell tower. If you're lucky you may even find deer roaming around.
The Ark (Main Street) has some good music but depends on the night.
Again, Necto on Friday night if you want to dance. Never been to Aut Bar but heard it's nice.
Of course, you need to visit the shrine that is the Big House--a trip to Ann Arbor would be remiss without it. Though it's probably under construction right now. Still, it's the Big House, and if you intend to come to Michigan, you need to learn how to worship the house of Bo Schembechler.
