Did you have it cremated? Put the ashes in a doggie vase and you can have him around!!!

I had a dog put down. And the appointment I got was for mid afternoon.

I had to go from my Army office to home, and take him over to the vet. And then return to my desk.

I was wearing my Army Major's uniform at that time, "Class B" dress. not the combat crap everyone has to wear today even Stateside. I wore dark sunglasses, so the doctor & staff couldn't see my eyes. They said I could leave the room, but I declined. I would hold him while he got the injection.

I held him in my arms as he died. I'm sure my tears ran beneath my eyeglasses.

Then I drove back to my office, and resumed what I'd been doing. I remembered the Drill Sergeants in Basic Training, when I was a lowly enlisted Private Recruit, screaming at us: "You're not authorized to have personal problems!"

Nor personal feelings, presumably. I still suspect them as being a character weakness to this day. They're something I rarely let out of the box, for special occasions only, but not as a daily indulgence.

Chulo, I am so sorry. It is never easy losing a pet. Allow yourself some time to grieve, and remember all the fun times you had with him. Maybe, after a while you might want to adopt another pet. Sending you my condolences and hugs!

So sorry. I've been there several times. The hardest part is not your loss, it's that this sweet personality is gone forever. Except in your memory and pictures. I found it great therapy to find a really fun pic and spend the time having it printed and then frame it and have it where I can talk to my buddy, at least for a while. I don't really believe in an afterlife but if there's any chance, I want my lost pup to know I'm loving him still.

I'm with you, bud. Though it has been years, I'm still not over having to put down my little guy

    smhomer_zpsgxyxkmkz.jpg

but he had a multitude of the indignities of old age, and I knew he was enduring all that pain just out of love for me. The time comes when we have to do the responsible and loving thing and let their suffering end; and you did that--true selfless love. He'll always be with you, not only in your memories but also in your heart. Just call on him, and he's there for you. Really, he is. Take care, compadre.

I'm crying as I type this.

I remember the first day I got him almost 9-10 years ago. He was actually my former roommates dog who was moving out of state for school and couldn't bring him along. He had nobody to take care of him so I reluctantly said yes.

I remember the first night he would wait by the front door for his owner to come home. he looked so sad. I didn't know what to do, and he's kinda of big dog so I just sat by him near the door and petted him till he went to sleep. The following days he started to sleep with us (my ex bf) in our bedroom. Then eventually he started sleeping with us every night.

I never knew something that wasn't even human could be so loving and kind. He was such a gentle soul. He knew when I was mad and sad. When I broke up with my ex and was moving out of out apartment, I remember sitting in the living room crying that my marriage was over. We were engaged and planning our wedding. MY dog came up to me and started licking my tears and whimpering. As if to say "don't cry". I will never forget that moment.

Ugh. I hope if there is an afterlife I can spend it with him. He is perfect in every way. I hope he feels my love from here....icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I'm sorry buddy. That really sucks. I'm just glad you made the decision to give him a home and love him after your former roommate left. And based on what you wrote, he realized what you did for him and loved you back! You did good. Cherish all the memories.

Sincerely sorry, and know exactly what you are going through. I just put my dog down on Wednesday, and it was the hardest thing I ever had to do. He was sixteen, so I had him for the majority of my life. I am still crying right now icon_sad.gif((( The good memories of your dog will live on, and be glad that you were blessed with such a loving companion.

    I'm so sorry. icon_redface.gif

I'm sure you loved each other very much.

I like to think of my Riley (his name) watching over me now. I call him my little angel. Probably getting into trouble up there too. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I can still remember the way his wet nose felt. His smell. His bark. My baby...icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Sorry to hear - after so many years. Take comfort in that you did the right thing for him. There is nothing like the unconditional love you get from a dog - better than most humans in that regard.
