Just one day after a heartbreaking setback on the pro-discrimination bill HB 597, I am elated to finally be able tell you about something we’ve been working on for months…

Governor John Bel Edwards has issued an executive order banning discrimination against LGBT people who work for state government, LGBT people who receive state services or benefits, and LGBT people who work for state contractors.

Unlike orders issued by previous governors, Gov. Edwards’ order protects both sexual orientation and gender identity, making this the first time transgender people have ever had any degree of statewide legal protections in Louisiana.

We would never have asked for or accepted anything less than fully inclusive, nor would our partners at Forum for Equality and Louisiana Trans Advocates.

This order is a strong statement from our governor that discrimination against LGBT people is wrong and should not be tolerated in Louisiana. The Legislature should see this as an inspiration to pass bills – including HB 925 by Rep. Joe Bouie and SB 436 by Sen. Troy Carter – to extend these employment protections to all workers in Louisiana, in both the public and private sectors.

For someone like me who remembers the pain and outrage we all felt when Gov. Jindal chose to rescind an order issued by Gov. Blanco that prohibited discrimination motivated by sexual orientation, it feels like a great weight has been lifted today. For the first time in years, I feel like I can breathe a little easier.

We know we still have a long road to walk towards full lived and legal equality, but we took a big step along that path today!

Quite the change from the last 8 years!

Most pleased that Piyush Jindal is gone as Governor and that "Diapers Dave" Vitter lost the Governor's race to Bel Edwards.

Being that you're an actual resident of Louisiana I value your viewpoint more than other RJ members in these matters of State politics. But I would add that I think that Jindal was a freakish aberration, who is best left to become a footnote in history.

Jindal was one of the most evil politicians in office. I believe he would quite literally slit his mother's throat for a vote. EVERYTHING he ever did while in office was backwards. It's quite common to see signs in people's yards here that say "Jindal, please stop talking" because everything out of his mouth was just retarded. A complete embarrassment to the state.

Good for you Radd! Its a small step for us, much like how I felt when president Obama amended executive order 11246 for federal contractors.

This Louisiana state executive order sounds much like the federal contractors eo 11246, in that the 'religious exemption' stayed while adding LGBT employment protections in addition

Im beginning to feel as though the exposure of 11246, with its GW Bush religious exemption, was the start of something positive in the turn around and exposure of the viscous right wing and its 'plan' for future america, we are witnessing the collapse of that evil plan. Hopefully Jindal will just fade out of politics.

We're not out from under the shitpile left by Jindal yet. Now we have to sort out the issue of a budget crisis caused by nearly 8 years of patching up lower revenues with one-time funding sources. Taken by itself, the revenue slump of any one of those years isn't too bad. Added up however and there's just nowhere for the money to come from, hence the horrific cuts we suffered over the last few years and the 100% necessary tax increases (we'll need to sort out the abject wastefulness too).

Yup. Here in the French Quarter we now have the highest sales tax in the U.S. A whopping 10.25%! Not to mention, they've doubled the price of parking, doubled the price of parking tickets and extended the parking meters to go later into the evening and Saturdays now. This is what it's like to have a Republican governor apparently.

But who is to say, what the next governor will do... Put back in place the executive order and go back to the Jindal era? That's the problem with gubernatorial and presidential executive orders, they can always be rescinded by the next executive in office…

Actually, the issue of parking is really interesting. One of the reasons parking is such a nightmare is partly BECAUSE they shut the meters off. There's a book by a UCLA professor named Donald Shoup: The High Cost of Free Parking that I recommend people read.

Another example of a DEMOCRAT throwing the Republican hate laws into the garbage, along with the whole steaming pile of GOP bigotry.

Great news, Radd! And kudos to you for being part of the advocacy efforts that led to it.
