Such a shame to loose another international long standing real talent, he was one of the biggest writers of our time and wrote more for other people than himself, thousands of songs that became hits. He was very unique in his style, I used to listen to his Purple Rain album while in college and have lots of memories getting wasted with friends with that playing in the background. Oh to be 19 again haha, anyhow he will be missed by family, friends and fans the world over, he actually wrote 1999 for the future hit in that year because he knew it would be played during that time especially around new year, thats forward thinking for you.
Shame to pass away so young and from flu for god sake, I never got to see him live which would have been great, I thought it was nice that he set up his recording studio in his home town to employ locals and bring business to the area, thats loyalty for you, he never forgot his roots.
    RIP
    Fond memories

Prince is dead? Such a shame, he never even got to be King.

Seriously though, best super bowl half time show performance ever by far. I remember at the time just laughing to myself "holy shit this little motherfucker is killing it" and that was when it was going on, he wasn't dead yet so there was none of that "oh suddenly everything he did was great, even when he raped little boys" michael jackson posthumous bs. He just rose to the occasion in such a massively impressive way on the biggest stage, it was really amazing to watch.

Only just found this out. The death of Victoria Woods got more news coverage than the queen's birthday in the UK today.

I just learned of this too. I really enjoyed his music and as another posted mentioned; he wrote a lot of great songs for other popular artists. He was truly talented.

it always seems to be the ones with talent that go too soon. Can't it be Kim Kardashian that dies? Or Donald Trump? Bieber even? I'd be OK with all of them dying.... at once.

    RIP Prince

I have trouble feeling sorry for mega wealthy drug addicts like Prince, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston just to name a few.

Their handlers should have taken better care of them.

I think we need to wait for the autopsy report before that kind of prejudgement. Maybe it was drug related, maybe something else.

It will probably have to wait a day or two (maybe longer?) for mainstream news agencies to pick up that he died of "AIDS".

His act was possibly on the worst side of the self-referential 80's over-hype. But FWIW, I thought he was better and far more original than Muhdonnna.

Just came across this. So much for having been a ladies man. Could probably explain a few things or two about him:

Now the source of the AIDS allegation (The Santa Monica Observer, Christine Peake, already linked above), and stripped for only first half of article:

"Sadly Prince Rogers Nelson has passed away today aged 57. Two days ago, a confidential source came to SMObserved.com and told us that Prince was dying of AIDS. Our source said Prince contracted HIV in the 90's which he kept private. HIV/AIDS has yet to be confirmed officially as the cause of death. But if he died of something else 2 days after we heard he was dying of HIV/AIDS . . . well, it would be a remarkable coincidence.

Prince has had a very weakened immune system over the past weeks, with those close to him reporting he had the flu. His plane made an emergency landing recently due to a sick passenger -- the rockstar himself.

According to his publicist, Prince had recently been hospitalized for dehydration and influenza. However, TMZ reports that the emergency landing in Moline, 6 days before his death, was so that the singer could be rushed to a hospital and administered a "save shot" to counteract the effects of an opiate.

Emergency services in Minnesota arrived at 9:30 AM this morning, to find the iconic singer dead in an elevator at his "Paisley Park" studio, said a spokesman for the local paramedics.

Witness reports had Prince pacing a parking lot at his studio last night, looking worried and upset. More details on his condition are no doubt forthcoming. But we have heard that Prince believed he had been cured of a chronic condition through faith. Encouraged by those around him, he stopped taking his medications. The condition returned, but it was too late for medication.

The rockstar has long been rumored to have contracted HIV/AIDS, which he was not medicating due to his membership in the Jehovah's Witnesses church. Our sources are saying Prince developed HIV in the 1990's, but more recently a couple friends and radical church goers, convinced him to withdraw from using protease inhibitors or other medications.

Some Jehovah's Witnesses are known to forego modern medicine in favor of prayer. Other Jehovah's Witnesses take issue with this interpretation of their religion.

Prince became one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 2001 following a two-year-long debate with friend and fellow Jehovah's Witness musician Larry Graham. Prince said that he didn't consider it a conversion, but a "realization". "It's like Morpheus and Neo in The Matrix," he explained. He attends meetings at a local Kingdom Hall and occasionally knocks on people's doors to discuss his faith.

Praise for the Purple One's music poured in from around the globe. The Los Angeles Times reported that "Prince succeeded as often as he failed, but that's precisely why his music was great." "This is what it sounds like, when doves cry," said the Rolling Stone. President Obama called prince "a creative icon" who set new boundaries. Elton John called him "The best performer that I have ever seen.

Prince reportedly needed double hip-replacement surgery since 2005 but would not undergo the operation, not a bloodless surgery, because Jehovah's Witnesses do not accept blood transfusions. The condition was rumored to be aggravated by repeated onstage dancing in high-heeled boots. However, when Prince was interviewed in 2010, journalist Peter Willis said that he believed the rumors of Prince needing double hip surgery to be unfounded and untrue, as Prince appeared to be agile."
