He said he'll release them after the election. He clearly thinks his followers, the Republicans, are incredibly stupid. And he's right.

It is disqualifying for a modern-day presidential nominee to refuse to release tax returns to the voters, especially one who has not been subject to public scrutiny in either military or public service. Tax returns provide the public with its sole confirmation of the veracity of a candidate's representations regarding charities, priorities, wealth, tax conformance, and conflicts of interest. Further, while not a likely circumstance, the potential for hidden inappropriate associations with foreign entities, criminal organizations, or other unsavory groups is simply too great a risk to ignore for someone who is seeking to become commander-in-chief.

Mr. Trump says he is being audited. So? There is nothing that prevents releasing tax returns that are being audited. Further, he could release returns for the years immediately prior to the years under audit. There is only one logical explanation for Mr. Trump's refusal to release his returns: there is a bombshell in them. Given Mr. Trump's equanimity with other flaws in his history, we can only assume it's a bombshell of unusual size.
(Anticipating inquiries regarding my own tax release history, I released my 2010 tax returns in January of 2012 and I released my 2011 tax returns as soon as they were completed, in September of 2012.)

I've been voting a long time now and never once checked out a candidate's tax return. Just saying...

P.S. It's not a prerequisite nor is there a law requiring the release of tax information.

Sort of like never getting to see Obama's Harvard transcripts or Hillary's $500,000 speech transcripts.

You might want to see it but it might not happen.

It's been a Presidential candidate precedent for decades. Trump will be the first candidate to not release his returns in modern political memory. Even if he's got nothing to hide (and the general belief is that he does), it's a disturbing display of personal arrogance & defiance. Trump has long felt that he's superior to ordinary mortals, and here's yet another glaring example.

Even previous Republican candidate Mitt Romney "...calls decision by Trump not to release tax returns 'disqualifying'".

I suspect this is another display of Trump's ego.

Releasing his income tax records would prove that he is not nearly as wealthy as he claims he is. It would also show what a tightwad piker he is when giving out charitable donations.

Sure, I'd like Trump to release his tax returns as soon as they're filed, and retroactively to 2015, too, but I wonder why the MSM never pursued Obama's academic transcripts with the same zeal that they're pursuing this.

Flashback: Richard Nixon Released Tax Returns While Under Audit

Even Richard Nixon released his taxes while under audit.

Donald Trump has said that the ongoing audit of his taxes has prevented him from releasing them to the public.

But according to Joseph Thorndike, director of the Tax History Project at Tax Analysts, Richard Nixon released his taxes while under audit.

    As Thorndike recently wrote:

Nixon was not a guy naturally inclined to be transparent. But in the fall of 1973, he was in a world of hurt concerning his personal finances. In particular, critics were suggesting there was something fishy about his tax returns. Nixon defended himself, even insisting to one dubious audience that "I'm not a crook."

But the questions kept coming, and eventually Nixon tried to clear things up by releasing his tax returns. In December 1973 he made the returns public and asked the congressional Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation (today called simply the Joint Committee on Taxation) to examine them for errors. (You can see examine Nixon's returns for yourself by visiting the Tax History Project, which archives all presidential tax returns.)

And as it turned out, the JCT did find problems in the returns - to the tune of $476,431. That's real money (about $2.5 million in today's dollars), and it reflected real errors on Nixon's returns. (For details on the Nixon investigation, see my paper for the JCT's 90th anniversary celebration in February.)

But here's the crucial point: The JCT was not the only government body examining Nixon's returns after he made them public. The IRS was doing it too. The president's returns had already been audited once, but the agency began a second audit just before Nixon made his public release.

Ultimately, the IRS reached much the same conclusion as the JCT: Nixon owed almost half a million dollars in unpaid taxes and interest. Eventually, Nixon promised to make good on the deficiency.

Although it has never been required by any law, Nixon started this whole event by releasing his taxes, which was followed by an audit which revealed he paid only .08% tax on over $700,000 of income. Gerald Ford did not release his tax returns but since every presidential candidate has released tax returns. This, "I am being audited" is irrelevant as the taxpayer can do whatever they wish with their tax returns.

    Bill Clinton released limited taxes.

    Reagan did not.

Sanders only release 2014. And wont release more until Hilary releases transcripts of her speeches to wall street.

Basically the people voting for Trump dont care.

Clinton is the last person to demand transparency.

This is what I don't like about our country. The wealthiest (and the poorest) pay virtually no taxes. I had confidence that Cruz would have actually cut out the loopholes for the wealthiest, so that they would at least be paying something like 10%. 10% even feels low, but it is higher than the 0%-2% that I suspect most millionaires pay.

I don't really trust Trump to raise taxes on millionaires and billionaires, but I think there's at least a possibility that he does so. Hillary most certainly will not - any tax increase she passes will have a trillion loopholes in the back that will protect all the wealthy.

We know why, and it has something in common with Sen. Warren.

I trust Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders to hold Hillary to account.

I don't trust the Republican Congress and I don't trust Trump to follow through with any of his current suggestions for governing. He's a BullShit Artist.

Those attack ads just keep writing themselves:

"There is only one logical explanation for Mr. Trump's refusal to release his returns: there is a bombshell in them. Given Mr. Trump's equanimity with other flaws in his history, we can only assume it's a bombshell of unusual size."
