In another historical moment for the Obama administration, the Senate on Tuesday evening confirmed the long-stalled nomination of Eric Fanning to be Army secretary.

Fanning thus becomes the first openly gay leader of any U.S. military service.

Wasn't it only yesterday that Artless was kvetching about the GOPers' "failure" to confirm Fanning? (Query, where is found any duty to do so?) Now that Obama's finally given the overdue assurances on Gitmo that the GOP Senator from KS and others were rightly demanding - Obama milked this self-created crisis in a crucible to the max, and Artless and his Demologues lapped it up like fresh cream - he dropped his opposition. A simple political issue resolved by the give-and-take of politics, despite Artless's unnecessarily fanning the flames.

Meanwhile, republicans continue to 'sneak' their religious bill in the defense budget icon_evil.gif

White House ‘strongly objects’ to anti-LGBT defense bill
    https://www.washingtonblade.com/2016/05/17/white-house-strongly-objects-to-defense-bill-over-anti-lgbt-component/

Ahead of an expected vote in the U.S. House on major defense spending legislation, the White House is making clear it “strongly objects” a provision in the bill that would undermine President Obama’s executive order against anti-LGBT workplace discrimination among federal contractors. The White House Office of Management & Budget unveiled on Monday its Statement of Administration Policy, a formal document outlining the administration’s position on legislation pending before Congress, on the fiscal year 2017 defense authorization bill, which could come to a floor on the House floor as soon as Wednesday. The 17-page document signals President Obama would veto the bill. The administration objects to numerous provisions in the $583 billion package, including an amendment inserted by Rep. Steve Russell (R-Okla.) last month during committee markup that would undercut Obama’s executive order against anti-LGBT discrimination.

Under a heading titled, “Exemptions to Civil Rights Laws,” the statement elaborates on the White House opposition to the provision, known as Section 1094, and says the administration “strongly objects” to it. “This Administration is committed to promoting equal employment opportunities for all Americans regardless of who they are or who they love while at the same time preserving longstanding safeguards in the law for religious liberty, including the religious exemption codified in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” the statement says. “In authorizing certain Federal awardees to discriminate in Government-funded jobs, section 1094 represents a step in the wrong direction for our country that will keep qualified American workers from being able to hold jobs funded by the American people.”

Under questioning from Washington Blade on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest declined to say explicitly whether Obama would veto the defense authorization bill over the anti-LGBT language alone, but indicated that was case, calling the provision seeking to enable discrimination “perverse.”

Because the measure would have the force of law, it would overrule the executive order signed by President Obama in 2014 prohibiting contractors doing more than $10,000 a year in business with the U.S. government from engaging in anti-LGBT discrimination against employees. The president included no religious exemption in his order, although he left in place a Bush-era exemption allowing religious organizations contracting with the U.S. government to favor co-religionists in hiring practices.

The amendment provides an exemption for “any religious corporation, religious association, religious educational institution or religious society” contracting with the U.S. government. All of those terms are undefined in the amendment, but the lack of definition for “religious corporation” could allow courts to construe the term broadly to any federal contractor — not just religious organizations — in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2014 decision in the Hobby Lobby case.

Sorry if my reporting on a media piece that was embarrassing to your Repugnants was "fanning the flames". I'm sure in your world any criticism of the idiot Right is "fanning the flames". You guys don't allow any criticism within your own ranks, so why should you tolerate it by anyone else?

But apparently the mounting media pressure, which I accurately reported, may have finally made Republicans bring enough pressure on Kansas Republican Senator Pat Roberts to make him cave. And the so-called Obama concessions are no concessions at all, since Leavenworth was already off the Administration's list for Guantanamo relocations.

So Kansans and their paranoid (and play-acting) Senator can rest easy. No Muslims are gonna be detained within the formidable stones walls of the several prisons located there, that make Leavenworth a true "prison town". I believe their biggest source of employment and income.

I've toured both the Army's Disciplinary Barracks (DB), which is a military prison for all the services except for the Marines (at least during my own tenure), as well as the Federal prison in Leavenworth. A consequence of my being an Army Military Police Officer, who also took my Command & General Staff College training (C&GSC) at Fort Leavenworth, along with visits there for other courses.

I know the terrain, shall we say. And this Kansas Senator Roberts is just grandstanding, as the White House says. Maybe NO dangerous Federal criminals, military or civilian, should be sent there, either. I'm sure the local community's economy will love their Senator for that, when the prison population dives, and the prison staffing with it.

I can imagine the screaming on the Republican side if a position as important as Secretary of the Army were left unfilled because of Democratic obstruction while the country is in the middle of war.

The duty you ask about is to safeguard the Nation.

Huh, the Secretary of the Army has nothing to do with safeguarding the nation. The Secretary of the Army is a civilian position responsible for the Army's budget.

Here's the latest breaking news story from the Secretary's Website:

"Army allows Soldiers to wear headphones in gym."

Maybe he's forcing them to listen to Madonna and Show Tunes, lol.

"The Secretary of the Army (SA or SECARMY) is a senior civilian official within the Department of Defense of the United States of America with statutory responsibility for all matters relating to the United States Army: manpower, personnel, reserve affairs, installations, environmental issues, weapons systems and equipment acquisition, communications, and financial management."

Sounds like he will have a big role in safeguarding the nation.

Just because I'm gay doesn't meant I have to be a lemming and follow the gay crowd. I can think for myself and don't need any group to tell me what to believe or that what I believe doesn't make me eligible to be a member of the group.

All I'm hearing is comments like "It's about time," "Finally," or "Good news." No one's talking about his qualifications or what makes him distinctly suitable for the job above anyone else. I suspect most people haven't even heard of the guy before. It's just hooray there's a homo secretary now. There's nothing about being gay that makes one distinctly qualified for any job. Evidently even straight guys can be paid paid enought to portray gay sex acts in porn.

I hate the PC bullshit that we have to have a black president, a woman president, a gay president (that one's coming) or (insert your favorite group here) president just because. What's wrong with someone be qualified for the position? What's wrong with wanting to talk about someone's qualifications rather than what he does with his sex organs? So no, I won't be kow-towed by your stupid glib comments and slink away just because you think I'm not gay enough.

lol - You enter a discussion with a flippant (and pretty offensive) remark like,"what is it about where he sticks his dick that makes him suited for the job?" then get all butt hurt when you're not taken seriously. Do grow up.

Discussion? What discussion? I entered with a legitimate, albeit ignored, question only to be acknowledge by someone doubting my gayness. If you're looking for butt hurt try looking a mirror. You're the one who asked me the direct question. I answered and seems you got your butt hurt when reminded that the only thing that separates us from straights is our sexual expression. And if he gloriously fucks up in his new position and the headlines read "First Gay Army Sec Screws Up Royally" you'll be screaming but what does his being gay have anything to do with it! You can't have it both ways.

He was confirmed by a UNANIMOUS vote in the Senate! Apparently, senators on both sides of the aisle consider him to be immensely qualified.

You just don't get it you ignorant queen. And I'm only calling you an ignorant queen because your comment above is one that could only be uttered by an ignorant queen.

It's not that it's "where he sticks his dick" that makes him suited for the job that's the issue. It's the fact that he was appointed by Obama and confirmed UNANIMOUSLY by the Senate DESPITE "where he sticks his dick" that's newsworthy.

Keep in mind that it wasn't that long ago that gay people were considered unsuitable to even be IN the military just because of their sexual orientation. And now, a gay man has just been confirmed as the nation's newest Secretary of the Army! As a gay man, I see this as real progress and am very happy it has occurred.

It's really a shame that an ignorant queen such as yourself can be so obnoxiously dismissive of a very positive development for our community.

^Ah a name caller. So junior high. Come at me when you grow up.

And it bears repeating: And if he gloriously fucks up in his new position and the headlines read "First Gay Army Sec Screws Up Royally" you'll be screaming "but what does his being gay have anything to do with it?!"

You can't have it both ways.

    You are what you are.

Why are you so sure he'll screw up? Why are you assuming that the headlines will make an issue of his sexual orientation? And why are you assuming what I'll be screaming at a hypothetical headline?

You seem to be making a lot of assumptions to justify your position.

Ok Allen, I'll say it very slowly so you can follow.

    I'm...not...saying...he...WILL...screw...up...I'm...saying...IF...he...screws...up...It's...called...a...hypothetical.

And I feel pretty good about my assumptions since I know a bit about human nature.

True. Although I do remember all the claims of the Romney supporters here, during the 2012 Presidential election. Obama was really the enemy of LGBT, and no better than Romney. So might as well vote Republican. Despite Obama's first-term record, which was already extremely gay-friendly to an unprecedented degree. Where are their voices now to retract their former claims?

Oh, I know. They're now telling us that it's Hillary who's the enemy and false friend of GLBT. Instead we should put our faith in Trump and the Republican Party to retain gay gains and our civil rights. History (and Party hucksters) repeats itself.
