Foxconn cuts 60,000 jobs, replaces with robots

In a bid to accelerate growth and reduce labor costs, Apple supplier Foxconn cut 60,000 jobs at a single factory, work that is now being completed by robots. As many as 600 companies in the Chinese manufacturing hub of Kunshan may have similar plans to automate their workforce, according to a government survey.

Foxconn spokesperson Xu Yulian told the South China Morning Post, “The Foxconn factory has reduced its employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000, thanks to the introduction of robots. It has tasted success in reduction of labor costs.” He added, “More companies are likely to follow suit.”

If a machine can do your job you can rest assured it eventually will. No one can be complacent. You have to keep on top of trends in your field and have a plan for your next move.

Yet it is in everyone's interest for people to be employed.
Unemployed people can't afford to buy the products being produced by robots.

Nor, even outside of a paycheck, do robots provide satisfaction people get from working, from engaging society. And that goes back to the beginning of humanity, to community forming and survival. Yet one day soon enough robots will be making robots, we'll see Star Trek Data's "positronic" brain and there will not be any job of manual labor or any professional endeavor that they won't be able to replace. What was once science fiction is coming online fast. What answer to that is there other than that we begin to change how we think about economy.
