We Get Set Upon By Elderly Widows

Last weekend a gay friend of ours found his car had a flat tire when he went to drive it. He lives in a gated upscale retirement village, of private homes and some condo-like towers. So he phoned me and asked if I could help, since he doesn't have AAA. Normally the staff might have assisted, but those members were gone for the Memorial Day weekend, not back until Tuesday.

So we drove up there, and waited for him in this very posh lobby. As we sat there numerous elderly female residents were coming in and out, most of whom said hello to us rather effusively, with big smiles. And asked if we were new residents. Then our friend arrived to escort us upstairs in an elevator. A woman scooted in with us, and immediately got all friendly & talkative, and began to tell my husband & me how handsome we are. icon_eek.gif And this one, like the others, wanted to know if we were moving in.

Then it happened again on the 10th floor where he lives as we encountered another female resident. And in the elevator going back down. And in the lobby with my husband as he waited for me to get the tire changed outside (fortunately our friend's Lexus has a full-size spare tire). I began to wonder if this was a convent for retired nuns or something, we saw almost no men.

When his car was fixed we all drove off in our own cars. Going to lunch, which our friend graciously covered in compensation for our troubles. We asked him if his apartment tower was always like that, with the women so aggressive. Yes, he told us. Mostly widows and desperate for another rich husband, and perhaps some late-life geriatric sex. Which none of us was about to provide. He gets the treatment a lot, too, because he hasn't told anyone there he's gay. I had no idea the old ladies could be so horny!

Some may be horny, too. (Why not?)
Many are in for some extra cash, I daresay!

When i first visited Florida in 1984 with my now ex-wife ( Florida is her homestate ) , and coming from Australia , i thought i had stepped in a gigantic retirement and nursing home !!
It doesn't shock me anymore when i come visit , i have gotten used to it ...
And at almost 60 , it really feels good when i got asked out for a date from one of those nice older ladies ...icon_redface.gif

    "...Mostly widows and desperate..."

Just remember, you said it. I didn't.

Gawd I remember that skit. I love Monty Python. But I don't think these old ladies in the high-rise wanted to beat me up, just rip my clothes off. icon_razz.gif. I couldn't believe how unashamedly aggressive they were!

Retirement communities seem to be increasingly popular here. But not the stereotypical sterile old age homes, where the old folks are warehoused until they die. These are more like resorts, over multiple acres. Of course they're not specifically gay. I think there's a few of those out West with more being contemplated. But when you live near gay population centers like South Florida it wouldn't be a big problem.

And it's progressive care. You can start in private-style homes or condo-like complexes that are indistinguishable in appearance from their non-retirement counterparts. Except for emergency pull cords in most of the rooms, that connect to the on-site 24/7 medical response center.

A friend of ours lives in a very nice one. She has 7 rooms, a 70-foot outside terrace that wraps around her 4th-floor apartment, with a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. She gets maid service included in her monthly maintenance fee (although she still keeps her own long-time maid), has all her own furniture including a grand piano, can still drive her car. Not bad for a widow who lives alone.

But when a resident's health declines they get moved to a smaller facility on site with more intensive care. If necessary they finally end in what is essentially hospice care. They don't own their properties, can't pass them to their heirs. Though in some cases they have some equity and can sell them back if they want to move out. But if they die it all reverts back to the corporation, with no value to their estate.

It's a retirement model that's new to me. And some of them begin at age 55, so you wouldn't have too long to wait, if you wish to retire to one.

I remember my now deceased bachelor uncle complaining about the "old biddies" in his retirement community. He hated going down to the rec room because the old ladies were so aggressive.
