A top New York law firm, Cravath, recently increased its first year associates' (i.e., recent law school grads) base compensation to $180K and its 8th year associates' base salary to $315K. Expect other top law firms to follow. Of course some of these associates also receive merit bonuses based on billable hours, sometimes exceeding $100K. Note that top law firm compensation was stagnant for 10 years. Do you think top law firm attorneys are paid too much?
