Anyone else find it dissapointing that web cams are so strongly ascociated with lewd acts and sexually craved, highly questionable online personas? It is such a strong ascociation that at a single mention of a web cam people will assume you want to do something (or want them to do something) sexual on camera.

I do not know about you all - but i like seeing the person i am talking to. I especially like hearing them. I strive to make my online chats as close to real life ones as possible (with the people i like anyway). It is much more personal and interesting that way.

Furthermore you can have so much fun with a web cam! When i meet someone i like online it is fun to show them around my house, or perhaps the front yard if i am chatting from there (isnt wireless great?). They often notice the swords hanging on the wall behind me in my room; it is fun to play show and tell with personal meaningful objects, especially books - tells you a lot about the person.

One time, i was chatting with a friend of mine who forgot it was his girlfiend's birthday tomorrow and decided he could bake her something since stores were closed at 1am. Only problem was he had no clue how. So i did a baking lesson online via webcam. I taped the cam above the stove looking down into the pot and he followed by directions and we both simultaneously baked some goodies..icon_smile.gif

This is all in stark contrast to the current conception of what what cams are used for and the sort of people who use them and what they want. I blame all of the people who open IM conversation with "hey, u cam?" followed by requests that virtually no one would accept from a stranger.

Sounds like so much fun! I never really had that happen, though. But the cam and voice do make the chat a lot nicer.

I've chatted with people via cam in the past, especially my friend in London, with nothing sexual happening. Once we were having a snowstorm and I set up the cam so he could see it. He didn't believe you could have a pink winter night sky.

I don't have a web cam but if it was used for the purpose that you suggest Delivis then I would get one. But when a guy on RJ says "do you cam" and I say no, and the next thing I see is him naked with a woody, then it is a bit of a turn-off for me.

Don't have cam either. The only cam in the house is in my sister's PC and I only use it to take pictures. icon_razz.gif It is remains a vital connection to my sisters abroad though, so my parents don't get to miss them as much (Though I still kinda miss my sister's kids).

And yeah, I'll probably never get one as long as I'm still not independent, because it has come to mean something sexual. If I get one for myself alone, the obvious accusation would be "Are you having camsex with someone in your room? Pervert!". LOL Internet is not that fast here either, so even incoming cams are jumpy and the voice almost undecipherable.

That said, I do not mind cams, as long as it's not sexual, it is quite reassuring actually be to be confident that the person on the other end really exists when you IM. Heh. I do not ask for it however, I leave it entirely up to the person at the other end whether he's comfortable with it on or not.

You recognize the camsex culprits pretty easily anyway because they always ask first if you have a cam and then lose interest when you say no.

Well what I think is so funny is that those laptop webcams are on the top of the monitor. It's just about impossible to do something lewd on them because of the way they're set up. I've found ever since I bought my new laptop that has one, I want to use it to chat now all the time. I like watching people's reactions cause I'm usually sort of a joker. The only problem with them is that I also am sort of distracted when I'm chatting, and people notice that I'm always watching the TV or other parts of the screen. Oh well.

This is an interesting observation. I remember when I was a little lad (somewhere around 1970) New Jersey Bell came out with their annual phone book. And on the cover was an artists rendering of the telephone over the decades since the beginning with the different designs/functions. And the last picture was somewhere into the future (dont recall the year - 2000?) with a video monitor and one could see the woman talking to the other woman on the screen (I think she was waving hello). I remembering thinking "how cool"..Isn't that cool?

Webcams are fun. "Camming" is not so much fun. I'd rather watch porn than watch someone jerk off on a web cam.

    Yes, Delivis!

I've just ordered a webcam and am pumped for its arrival!
I'm relatively new here and upon entering several chats here on R.J., I noticed that the simplest manner to connect with people is if they have the opportunity to see what you look like without having to see you posed for a pic.

Webcams can also display your personality, thus leading to a connection between yourself and someone else who may share similar habits, compulsions/impulsions, décor, and the like.

It's also funny that my mom is coming up for graduation and I'm wondering whether or not I should hide my cam because of the pervasive/adulterated stereotype with which webcams come ... haha.

    Awesome topic. =]

So unimaginative! How about responding, "Depends....is he a Rhode Island Red?"

    Or "I don´t like chicken"
