Washington (AFP) - The United States on Tuesday criticized Israel's plans to build 560 new settler homes in the West Bank, warning that they would be part of "systematic" land seizures undermining chances for peace.

Israel's green light for the homes came days after a key report from the diplomatic Quartet -- the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia -- warned that Israel's settlement expansion and confiscation of Palestinian land were eroding the possibility of a two-state peace settlement.

Completion of the homes would "be the latest step in what seems to be a systematic process of land seizures, settlement expansions and legalizations of outposts that is fundamentally undermining the prospects for a two-state solution," State Department spokesman John Kirby said.

"We oppose steps like these, which we believe are counterproductive to the cause of peace in general," he told a briefing.

Under new approval granted by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, planning for 560 new Jewish homes in the large Maale Adumim settlement east of Jerusalem will be allowed to move forward.

The settlement, founded in 1975, already has a population of more than 37,000.

The approval follows calls inside Israel for a harsh response to the latest spate of Palestinian attacks.

On Thursday, 13-year-old Israeli-American Hallel Yaffa Ariel was fatally stabbed in Kiryat Arba settlement on the outskirts of the flashpoint West Bank city of Hebron.

Her 19-year-old Palestinian assailant was then shot dead by a security guard.

A day later, Sarah Tarayra, 27, was shot dead after drawing a knife on Israeli forces in Hebron. She was a relative of the Kiryat Arba attacker.

The Quartet report also called on Palestinians to halt attacks and incitement to violence.

Peace talks have been at a complete standstill since a US-led initiative collapsed in April 2014.

    JTheM saidMeaningless.

I agree, there is no ACTION! Talk will not do anything to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The US gives Israel with our military aid/ tax money, which is use to keep occupation and oppression of Palestinians.

Then again why should the Palestinians be friend with U.S. government after what they have done to them? I can see why most Americans (older generations) are blind to see that or being taught that Israel is a "good guy".

This ongoing illegal settlements will never end. Two state solution? More like land grabbing, a one state solution for Israeli Jews. If they care so much about the Palestinian violence, then they will need to understand the occupation/land grabbing is not an answer to achieve peace in the region.

Coming from mwolverine in other thread:

    mw>[Marwan Barghouti]
I never said I am a supporter of Mawan Barghouti. You got the name all messed up. I said I do like Mustafa Barghouti.

mw>[Let's talk peace: The two-state solution]
Does Israel wants two state solution? This ongoing illegal settlements will never end. Two state solution? More like land grabbing...

Once again, mwolverine is not being realistic on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has always justifying Israel's crimes and living in denial. What can I say? He hates Palestinians than telling us the truth about Israel. He believes there is no occupation or state of Palestine. He believes East Jerusalem is in Israel, which is not true. His information on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is false and incorrect.

Not to mention, he defends Israeli settler little girl's family that support Israeli terrorists.
