U.S. lawsuit: A McDonald's worker was fired for being HIV-positive

    (Reuters) - The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said on Tuesday it has filed a lawsuit accusing the operators of a McDonald's restaurant in Bentonville, Arkansas, of firing a worker because he was HIV-positive.

    In its complaint against Mathews Management Co and Peach Orchard Inc, the EEOC said the worker was fired in February 2015 after admitting to the restaurant's general manager to having had "an interest" in a co-worker, and telling that co-worker about his HIV-positive status.

    The EEOC said the fired worker had been questioned a week earlier by his shift manager, and told he might lose his job because the defendants had previously fired a female worker who was also HIV-positive.

    "People with HIV face enough obstacles in their lives," said Katharine Kores, an EEOC district director in Memphis, which has jurisdiction over Arkansas, in a statement. "The ability to work in an environment free of discrimination should not be one of them."

    There has NEVER been a time when discrimination wasn't a powerful factor at the workplace....in ANY situation actually. I hope some of you can see the direction this kind of thinking can potentially go. All of you who assume that "the medical authorities" will continue to create antidotes for casual sexual dalliance and aren't so concerned about sero-conversion, leave yourself potentially open to an eventual rude awakening.

    1) Congress could write some cunning bills screwing "gays", especially those with HIV, and make your lives more difficult.
    2) Suddenly the drugs you are using to counter HIV begin to fail...or just STOP WORKING.

    Every time I read your posts I know I can rest assured knowing that I got a double serving of "stupid."

    One isolated incident of a person with HIV and now you come to conclusions about his sexual orientation and habits. We don't even know if this person is gay. He could have divulged his HIV status to a female coworker "on interest." He could be straight. You also use the word "dalliance" as if to imply you know exactly how this person got HIV. Stop with your judgments.

    As a black man, one would think that someone like you would be all too familiar with profiling, cornering and making negative assumptions about another person. But you're no better.

    Tell me about the HIV research in the US funded by "gay" money that is making strides. I cannot find any. The only funding seems to be via the feds. The same folk who DO NOT LIKE YOU.

    So, when I relate the possibility of the feds creating bills to hurt "gays" or that the drugs "gays" RELY on to keep HIV in check could suddenly become less effective, I do not expect the notion to be seen as "stupid".

    The job is "At Will"; the worker can be let go for any or NO REASON, at ANY TIME. The worker's shift supervisor suggested the HIV angle for firing, but management can demur on that...can come up with any number of trumped-up reasons for the dismissal.
