With the release of the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, the long-lived sci-fi franchise is going to boldly go where it's never gone before with the revelation that Hikaru Sulu — the helmsman of the Starship Enterprise played by John Cho — is gay.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand, it's great having another gay character created in an established film franchise. On the other hand, as George Takei points out, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry never envisioned this character to be gay in the first place, so why not just create a new character who just happened to be gay?

George Takei is being a baby.

His character never had a romantic interest in the original series, so who's to say whether he was gay or straight? Granted, Mr. Sulu didn't go around waving a rainbow flag but does that mean if he was gay he was closeted? Maybe 200 years in the future IT JUST WON'T MATTER.

All this talk about Gene Roddenberry and his legacy is crap. No, of course he wouldn't consider putting gay characters on his show in 1968. But there were something like 300 people on the Enterprise, most of them guys, and all of them willing to go flitting around outer space on a five year mission. What the fuck do you think was going on?

I think George is just being pissy because he didn't get to be the gay Sulu.

The big question in my mind is who John Cho's partner will be. Will he be one of those rare Asians to score a white boy? The Final Frontier, indeed! icon_lol.gif

They could have made Kirk bi. He'll sleep with just about any alien female...why not a few dudes too?

All the rest aside, I've thought for a long time the Star Trek is very, very much over due for a gay character -- be it one of the original characters, or a new character.

Canonical arguments are moot at this point, since they pulled that neat time-travel alternate-universe trick, three or four movies ago, to negate everything that happened in the previous time line.

However, I agree that a new character would have been better. He could have been, kick-ass on duty and "fabulous" after hours! But it would be pretty tacky to just introduce one new character as the token gay. They'd need a whole group of new characters, one of whom is gay. So yeah, it could get complicated.

More pressing though, what are they going to do about Anton Yelchin? Just find another actor?

They can make them all gay and it will not help. Stop gay pride perades, it make gays look like idiots!

OMFG! The whoorish commercials saturating TV... Gene Roddenberry must be spinning in his grave!
