Priebus says gay convention speaker is 'welcome in our party'
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said on Friday that the party will welcome PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, who is gay, to speak at the convention next week despite the party standing by its opposition to gay marriage.

He chooses to give a speech to a conservative group that supports marriage only between a man and a woman. I want to tear up his gay membership card.

    Well,
He's not alone. Many gay guys don't like the idea of a marriage label. It's fine by me though!

It's not about labels...It's about our right as free Americans to live our lives like our straight counterparts.

All the straights I know are miserable, fat and in relations they hate.
If it means tying the knot, ok, but not the other crap.
It seems when one commits to marriage, all the rest goes to hell?

Now, having the same rights I am all for! What it's called.....a DIFFERENT story!

They will probably welcome his money, given that so many corporations have pulled out of the RNC.

No doubt. Along with the image of an out gay at the speakers podium. "See, out Party platform, the most homophobic in history, hasn't offended gays at all."

And the official Republican anti-gay position goes beyond same-sex marriage. It also includes the denial of full civil rights to LGBT in all aspects of our lives. No protections for employment, in housing, in dealing with merchants who defy equal accommodation laws, in countless other ways.

If some of these guys on this site think it's OK to live like that, as second-class citizens across the board, not just in terms of marriage, then I think they should admit it. And stop trying to pretend their support of Republican candidates is strictly limited to a selfish disinterest in the issue of same-sex marriage alone.

And I think they also need to explain why they believe the denial of a wide range of equal civil rights for LGBT is acceptable, and not to be opposed. And why they feel compelled to preach in defense of these hateful & harmful policies on a gay site.

The RNC is allowing Thiel to speak because he has a ton of money, reportedly in the vicinity of $3B. Thiel, on the other hand, is speaking at the Republican convention because he has nothing to lose and probably doesn't give a fuck because he's already loaded. The guy is vindictive (talk about financing Hulk Hogan's lawsuit against Gawker to the tune of $10M just because Gawker pissed him off), however, and it would appear he shares some of Trump's unenviable characteristics.

    HA! icon_lol.gif now that's funny!
-well, I guess he qualifies a soldier in the war on the 'liberal media'
Now they can claim that big tent they're always bragging about....a big filthy-rich, white-guy tent
Wonder how welcome he'd be if he wanted to (openly) bring a boyfriend/husband?

I've done it. Not only to the convention, but to CPAC and NRA national conventions and lived to tell about it.

As soon as you go out onstage at the RNC, that'll mean something.

    Until then, not so much.

Nor until he openly identifies himself as gay onstage at the convention. Along with his gay BF.

I've never heard of Peter Thiel, but I admire him for speaking at the RNC convention. I look forward to his speech. I hope he delivers a powerful message that does not fall on deaf ears. Change from within is possible.

I think the GOP/Republican party now realises that gay men are NOT as big of a threat or adversary as once thought of.
I do think they might actually start to believe we are much, much more of an ALLY! THINK ABOUT IT.......

    The real threat still looms!

Remember this dude would not be out if he wasn't outed by gawker. Hence, the payback lawsuit. He would have gone on happily closeted, at least in a public awareness sense, for the rest of his life. He's super rich and insulated by that money (and it's power) from the real world we all live in. Think he ever goes anywhere where there is a risk someone will call him a fag and gay bash him where he would benefit from hate crime legislation? Or get fired from your job or evicted from your rental just because you are gay and the state you live in does not have inclusive laws that protect you. Our day to day issues aren't part of his life or even on his radar.

Look at these house gays just happily licking up the leftover table scraps of their homophobic Rethuglican masters and calling it "progress" hahahaaha, so sad.

Meanwhile, Republicans have passed a platform with the most anti-gay policies ever. #changefromwithin #gurlbye

Well yeah, I heard it and he gave a great speech. The audience cheered him when he announced that he's gay.

He's already rich but still young and very active investor in new companies, so he's got a stake in an economic boost. He's also an immigrant, so it blows up the democrat fear mongering about Republicans want to kills gays and hate immigrants.

Yes, it's true and hard to imagine that having a sound business sense with good values of hard work and a little charm might overcome the self loathing, dependant and co dependency that many only want....but not give back!

What I liked about Peter Thiel's speech is that he did not make his sexuality the center-piece of the speech. His "I'm proud to be a gay man, proud to be a Republican, but mostly I'm proud to be an American" was enough and perfect for the speech. He got an applause, and this is a good sign. Donald Trump following this with 2 separate comments regarding LGBT were also resoundingly applauded. I'm not denying that the GOP platform has a long way to go (it doesn't make me happy at all in its present state), but I have no doubt whatsoever that Donald Trump will ignore any and all anti-LGBT stances in the platform, and his comments in his speech (and at other previous in the campaign) are an indicator of that.

Except the part where Donald already pledged to support the platform's anti-privacy bathroom bills as well as pledging to appoint judges who will overturn "the shocking gay marriage decision" (his words).

But, like I said, house gays suffering from Stockholm Syndrome you have to ignore any evidence that doesn't reinforce your preferred belief that your slavers really really really like you deep down -- even if it means ignoring their own words. The Putin-whisperer Trump is homophobe, conning gullible house gays just like he's scammed everyone else. "Oh he said an acronym from the stage, that means I can't ignore his explicit promise to deny gay couples equal protection under the law overturn!" Pfft!
