Scoop: @realDonaldTrump was so unsure about @mike_pence that around midnight last night he asked top aides if he could get out of it...

...Needless to say, having rumors out there that you thought about dumping your vice presidential pick 12 hours after his name started leaking is a bad thing....

    That could explain this.

Donald Trump’s new running mate barely gets look-in as Republicans head for explosive showdown

Donald Trump introduced his vice presidential choice to America today, in a bizarre speech that focused on himself and barely mentioned the man he was supposed to inaugurate.

Mr Trump was slated to explain to supporters why he had decided on Mike Pence, the relatively little known governor of Indiana as his running mate, and unite them behind his choice.

Speaking from Trump Tower in New York he said Mr Pence had been his "first choice" and that they would run a campaign to "strengthen law and order".

But in a speech of almost an hour the mentions of his ally on the ticket were cursory and lasted only a few minutes.

As Mr Pence waited in the wings of the stage, the real estate mogul covered old ground, telling the audience that he had "looked after veterans" better than anyone else. He attacked Hillary Clinton, his Democratic rival as "crooked". He boasted about the votes he had received in the primary election race.

Some 28 minutes in, Mr Trump said he was going to talk about Mr Pence. But then became distracted again.

When the speech ended, Mr Trump made no attempt to stop for a photo opportunity with the man who, if they win, will be a heartbeat away from the presidency. His handshake was brief and unsmiling, and then he left the stage.

Which, like a Trump presidency, probably isn't going to happen in the end.

This election is giving us a new usage for the old verb "trumped," as Pence is learning. I just hope the country isn't trumped by Trump.
