I've never been to a bar, gay or straight. I've walked past some, looked in, and kept going. I hate being around the noise, the awful music, the smell of alcohol, and people who think they have to drink in order to have fun. I can't even begin to understand why anyone wants to go to bars or why it's considered fun.

not all gay bars are like your description. my fav neighborhood gay bar plays 60's and 70's music, has some truly excellent food specials and football parties.

i usally get one shot and then drink diet coke the rest of the night.

What is there to be frightened about? At worst you'll be bored and have ringing in your ears from the loud music, at best you'll meet someone interesting.
The bar scene differs widely in each city, and individual bars differ in their format and clientele, but you can make some broad generalizations:
except for certain unfriendly cities, e.g., Boston, in general somebody will talk to you during the course of an evening and occasionally that person will be someone you actually want to talk to. The rest is up to you.

Me. Our Mother Superior forbids us. I tried sneaking out of the convent once, but they had electrified fences, automated turrets., and antipersonnel mines.

Me! I have yet to be invited, because I refuse to go alone. I do walk past one every day so, surely, this counts for something, right?

No, not really. Went to a club one though while in the army, but it wasnt a gay one although enough guys were making out like skanks to fool someone.

As to why? I dislike the idea of meeting a guy in a bar. I would rather meet one in a library, at the pool, in a bagel shop, while at work, or be pleasantly surprised and find out that my cute new roomate is actually gay and work from there.

Something about bars just sends a cold shiver down my spine and not in a good way. They creep me out. Same with clubs. And strip joints. (Yes, my first sergent treated a few of us to a night out after a very successful training excercise. I was worried when they bought me several lap dances, and th girls didnt d anything for me. I blamed it on all the smoke in the air.)
