I'm watching it now. And NBC, which apparently has the exclusive TV broadcast rights in the US, keeps breaking away to commercials.

Visually interesting & impressive (if at times confusing), but exclusively about Brazil, in a sorta symbolic way I don't fully understand. I suppose other host countries have done similar, but this seems kinda way out. Some reference to the Games themselves might be nice.

But I dunno. What do you think? It's still going on, between the NBC commercials here in the US. So we've gotta be missing stuff here. I hope you get to see the whole thing where you are.

OK, now it's getting freakie. A big presentation about global warming.

Now I oppose global warming, that I know exists. Which makes me a "White libtard" with lots of the Right Wingers here. Who deny all the scientific evidence, provided by the preponderance of qualified scientists throughout the world. (Rush Limbaugh. Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly to the contrary, who haven't got a degree or any credentials remotely related to the subject)

But this topic has no place in an Olympics Opening Ceremony. No more than an anti-global warming dissertation would. Can this thing be kept focused on sports? And the athletes?

'How To Cope with Global Warming' is a message worthy of the world's attention.

If the presentation was awkward, I agree that it should have been made more artfully
for an audience of hundreds of millions.

The Olympics is still the world party we need every 4 years.

Disgusting! The US team was still marching in, the largest contingent in the Games, and NBC broke away to another commercial!

That may generate some comments tomorrow. A chance for all these World Class US athletes to be shown on TV, seen by their families & friends, perhaps the biggest moments of their lives, and it was denied them. For the sake of TV commercial profits.

Rot in Hell, NBC. I'm switching to another network for my news, and entertainment. And I'll do my best to avoid your sponsors. End of your Olympic coverage. I'll find that news elsewhere. [CLICK]

For years, ABC had the rights and televised the games and did a much better job. I've never liked NBC in terms of coverage for the Olympics. And of all countries to break away for a commercial, the US.? Unbelieveable.

Calm down Art. You're going to have a heart attack.

Lol. My Mexican husband is having a fit. He's worried he's going to miss Mexico because of the commercials. Lol

I would think my having a fatal heart attack would be welcomed by close to half the regular Forum contributors here. And I've already been told I'm close to one by doctors, with or without this issue. Making it kinda a moot point. I'm no longer seeking medical treatment for it.

Because frankly, I also don't really care much anymore. Except insofar as it might upset my husband. He's become rather dependent on me recently, due to his own health. Were it not for that obligation, I'd be glad to throw in the towel tomorrow.

NBC = Liberal money grabbing cunts!

BTW. Olympic rules will only allow NBC to broadcast and show clips.
If you're caught doing gifs etc. You could get sued by the IOC.
    PROFITS!

I am not watching. I don't care anymore.

It's not the best, but it's not the worst either. Brazil didn't have the money to put together a Grade A opening ceremony, but what it lacked in expensive set and bombastic production it made up for in enthusiasm and sheer joy.

Before I'd do anything so self-destructive as voting for Trump I'd destroy myself quickly by slitting my wrists. icon_razz.gif

But regarding antidepressants, one of my stories: When I was diagnosed with epilepsy the VA doctors put me on an antidepressant, in addition to my anti-convulsant. They said 60% of all epileptics had depression, so it was a preventive measure.

Well, I didn't think I was depressed. And certainly not about HAVING epilepsy. The diagnosis was actually welcome. It answered the strange symptoms I had (at least strange to me), and the epilepsy meds worked wonderfully. I'm very practical & pragmatic. If I've got something like epilepsy then I've got it, and better to have it correctly diagnosed and successfully under control, than the alternatives.

But I was getting side effects from the antidepressants they tried on me. Becoming impotent being the worst. And I didn't think they improved anything about my emotional state. I'm naturally a pretty happy, positive & upbeat guy. Instead my friends told me I was becoming a zombie. (Well, upbeat until recently, as my health has taken some big downturns, the writing on the wall)

So I said to the VA doctors: "I won't be taking these antidepressants anymore. I don't think they're necessary in my case. In fact, I can't think of a better way to actually depress a man than to make him impotent." The doctors didn't argue, and I stopped taking them, feeling much better afterwards. The improvement affirmed by my friends.

I personally liked how they paid their respects to the members of the Israeli Olympic team that were murdered at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich by the Black September Organization. It took the Olympics forever to remember them, but I guess it's better late than never.

I was watching NBC last night, hoping to see some of the Olympics. The commercials all night were great. It was a shame that the Olympics kept interrupting them throughout the evening.

They showed Nadia Comaneci watching the sole Rumanian competitor and applauding her. I remember Nadia competing as a young girl in the 76 Montreal Olympics, which I watched every night in the Army Rec Ctr. at the post where I was stationed. She seemed very serious about her gymnastics routine, and I don't think she smiled even once. That was also the Olympics where Bruce Jenner took gold in the decathlon, and Dwight Stones competed in the pole-vault. I've enjoyed watching the Olympics ever since.

It was Nadia who established Rumania as a top contender in women's gymnastics, which they dominated for for almost the next 40 years or so. Nadia's now married to American gymnast Bart Conner, and evidently lives in Oklahoma.
