Harry Frankfurt, an eminent moral philosopher and former professor at Princeton, wrote a brilliant essay in 1986 called “On Bullshit.” (Frankfurt himself wrote about Trump in this vein, as have Jeet Heer and Eldar Sarajlic.) In the essay, Frankfurt distinguishes crucially between lies and B.S.: “Telling a lie is an act with a sharp focus. It is designed to insert a particular falsehood at a specific point. . . . In order to invent a lie at all, [the teller of a lie] must think he knows what is true.”

But someone engaging in B.S., Frankfurt says, “is neither on the side of the true nor on the side of the false. His eye is not on the facts at all . . . except insofar as they may be pertinent to his interest in getting away with what he says.” Frankfurt writes that the B.S.-er’s “focus is panoramic rather than particular” and that he has “more spacious opportunities for improvisation, color, and imaginative play. This is less a matter of craft than of art. Hence the familiar notion of the ‘bullshit artist.’ ”

This has been Trump’s mode all his life....

...Harry Frankfurt concludes that liars and truth-tellers are both acutely aware of facts and truths. They are just choosing to play on opposite sides of the same game to serve their own ends. The B.S. artist, however, has lost all connection with reality. He pays no attention to the truth. “By virtue of this,” Frankfurt writes, “bullshit is a greater enemy of truth than lies are.”...

We see the consequences. As the crazy talk continues, standard rules of fact, truth and reality have disappeared in this campaign. Donald Trump has piled such vast quantities of his trademark product into the political arena that the stench is now overwhelming and unbearable.

I've always said that Trump is a salesman/marketer. My worst witnesses have been people with sales/marketing background because they lie, and they often cannot distinguish between what's true and what isn't true. I remember attending a sales conference for a Fortune 10 sales force when I was just starting my legal career, and the first thing that I learned was the sales folks' motto: "sell the sizzle, not the steak."

For a bit of perspective - there were at least 12 bids. It was at $19.50 or so and then for some odd reason Ebay pulled the listing.

DOMINUS saidI've always said that Trump is a salesman/marketer. I could never do sales. Tried once during a high school summer but walked away during training. I've near zero tolerance for bullshit. Oddly, I'd later wind up as the only editorial guy in my company to have received an award at an annual sales convention when they wanted to "honor" me for my achievements on the non sales side of things. I was okay with that--the trip was fun--and I liked many of them because they actually sold excellent information products which were needed by their customers. So they tended to have more integrity than the typical used car salesman. I've only one friend, not known from work, into sales--he's made a ton of money--grandfathered in as friend because we grew up together, but I find him often wrong, to be polite. In fact, I've kept my distance during tRump's campaign who I know he loves because I'd just bite his head off. I've known tRump to be scum for decades now, ever since a good acquaintance from work used to work for him. So I've known all this time about tRump's labor practices which have only recently come to public knowledge. The guy is garbage. Money doesn't change that.

My family was and is still in construction, never worked for him, but did play with some big leaguers including Melvin Simon who was friendly with my ol' man. Now that guy had lots of money but ran a first class operation, never a billing issue. Didn't screw people. And the ol'man could have made a shitton more money had he played the game that lesser developers wanted from him. But no, never. My brother has since turned down similar: we don't play to that shit. So it always struck me odd why my work friend, who I otherwise thought a man of integrity, put up with tRump's nonsense. I just wrote it off that he was trying to build his business but it did make me think somewhat less of him who I otherwise admired. He was quite talented in his profession. People sell their souls though, I don't know their reason. "My poverty is my pride"~~the prophet Muhammad
