Let us compete topless and show off our physiques, says USA men's gymnastic team

How can the USA men's gymnast team, forever in the shadow of the all-conquering female team, better market itself?

Compete topless, of course. That's the verdict of their star player, Sam Mikulak, who is a four-time national champion. "People make fun of us for wearing tights," he told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday.

"But if they saw how yoked we are" - "yoked" meaning muscular - "maybe that would make a difference."

In the interests of fair play, I think it should apply to all the men's gymnastics teams and individuals, especially Team GB (who just missed out on the bronze medal last night).

I don't know if he was kidding or not but I've never understood why they wear shirts. The whole idea is muscular power and control. Swimmers for a while wore goofy slick body suits and eventually they were dropped though my guess is because the sport management didn't want clothing technology to start being a factor. The only value of a shirt in gymnastics might be sweat management and keeping the parallel bars dry. I vote shirtless!!!

I feel if the teams went shirtless, there will be a MUCH higher frequency of injuries.

Seriously, even with what they wear now, as soon as the competion started, there was a wrist/forearm injury.

My doctor told me to ice it and said it should be better the next day... icon_twisted.gificon_lol.gif

They'd have to chalk up their hands and powder up their torsos to keep it safe and that ain't a look. I'm good with the stretchy shirts. Either way they're woof to my eye. To paraphrase a hetero quote: the hottest thing on a naked man is his face.

I think you got away lightly. You'd be in traction by now if you'd been watching the men's synchronized diving (he said, typing with his toes).

I forget the exact quote but it was by a guy. And even if you think just about good porn, as example, you'll see that it's true. Because it's the thoughts that come through on the facial expressions which make a scene hot, not just the below the waist activity.

Two gay guys walking past the sidewalk caf├ęs on south beach when along comes a steroided muscle guy. The one gay guy says to the other: "he has the body of a god". The other replies, "yeah, but with a face to protect it".

Shirtless, yes, I am completely in favor of that!

If I'm not mistaken, in the original Olympics -- in ancient Greece -- the athletes were completely nude. Now *there's* a thought!

I doubt competing shirtless would have prevented Alex Naddour from blowing his dismount on the floor, or Sam Mikulak from landing out of bounds twice, or Danell Leyva from falling off the high bar. If you're gonna talk big, better make sure you can back it up. I was there at the team finals Monday night and it was a disaster.

Having said that, I attended the 2012 Olympic trials in San Jose and the guys did all their warmups shirtless. It was truly a wet dream come true.

I also don't understand why track athletes aren't allowed to compete shirtless. I compete in masters' meets and on a hot day, at any distance over 400m, I would definitely have a better race if I ran shirtless.

    Similarly with college gymnastic competitions.

With wrestling matches (e.g., college) they are very likely to pull down the top of their singlet after they've wrestled someone. In my opinion wrestlers have even better bodies than gymnasts because with wrestlers it's more balanced and proportional.

Judo guys also tend to have bodies as hot as wrestlers but unfortunately it's usually covered by the gi. You can get a glimpse of it when they reposition and tighten the top and retie the belt.

Well, if you do not have the chops, one falls back on "props" to distract.

As if the OTHER teams, including the ones better than you, don't ALSO have bodies of similar appeal.

I did gymnastics from the time I was 6 until I was 22 and we seldom, if ever wore shirts while practicing. There were some non-competitive exhibition meets where we could compete shirtless as well and believe me, it is better. The tight tank tops don't provide any protection, and really, aside from some form of modesty, don't serve any other purpose that I can see.

    As for the diving...

Team GB's Jack Laugher and Chris Mears celebrate winning gold in the synchronized 3m springboard diving.
