Incredible Team USA Performance At The Olympics, I Believe Possibly Unprecedented In Several Aspects

Here's are the current results, with a few events remaining before closing ceremonies.

    http://www.nbcolympics.com/medals

Of special interest is the spectacular performance of the US women athletes. In many ways they outshone the US men, bringing as much "glory" to the country as the men did. Today's first-ever triathlon Gold victory was a good example.

At the very founding of the modern Olympics women had hardly any roll, but their involvement quickly escalated. Of course the original ancient Greek Olympic Games were all male. Women had some special events afterwards, sorta like the separate Paralympics today.

We Americans should be very proud of our incredible Olympic athletes.

China's 51 gold was pretty impressive in 2008, especially since it was China and umm, there aren't too many black people there.

GB is kicking ass too for such a small county.

America is doing great but what's new?

The US is now 41 gold, 114 total. I believe unprecedented for the US in certain events. And wonderful for Great Britain, as well.

I've always disregarded the Soviet Union countries (and now Russia) and China in the Olympics. Those are just State sponsored athlete factories, using drugs as has been proven time & again.

I only compare the performance of the free countries. Whose athletes have become what they are by their own often heroic efforts. Not as State-raised agents.

    UMayNeverKnow saidRyan Lockte notwithstanding.

Knock your own country all you like. Assuming we can believe you are in fact from the US, with your blank RJ profile. And knowing that Russia & China operate large infiltration and disruption operations on Western social media.

You wanna be taken seriously here you validate yourself a little more effectively. Especially before you try taking potshots at our US Olympic athletes.

This will be the best performance by the US since Summer 1984 in Los Angeles. Some argue the competition was uneven in LA, favoring the US. Then there's the 1904 Olympics, when the US received its highest count ever, over 370. So high it seems like a 1-time anomaly, and due to the new nature of the Olympics back then, that isn't comparable to today's Games.

Certainly Rio is notable, and unprecedented in how many medals the US won in new sports for us. And also, frankly, how it lost some where it was expected to win.

As far as the Chinese not having Black athletes as the US does, neither do US athletes come from State-run athlete factories. If anything, a number of our successful Black athletes had to overcome personal life challenges, in addition to mastering their sports field to Olympic Gold level, problems that elite Chinese athletes never faced. Some of our kids, Black & White both, had to fight their way through life to stand on that medals podium.

Well done to Team USA, but obviously from my point of view, massive congratulations go to Team GB for our biggest medal haul since 1908 and for beating the mighty China to second place in the medal ranking. I've shed a tear or two watching the Olympics over the last two weeks. I'm so proud and pleased for our athletes.

This is indeed the highest medal total for the USA, with more guaranteed on Sunday. It'll be interesting to see if that dominance continues in four years. I'm a high school track coach and we typically see a spike in participation after an Olympic year. Will that extend to other sports? Does the unprecedented success of the American distance runners create a spike in the road racing by the general public like it did in the 1970's with Prefontaine and Shorter? Are we likely to see any professional leagues in this country that currently don't exist (volleyball players play professionally in Europe)?

Yes, the accomplishments of Team GB cannot be overlooked or underrated. An absolutely fantastic accomplishment. No wonder you're so proud and got emotional. Congrats to your athletes from a Yank! icon_biggrin.gif

There is pro v-ball in the USA. Karch Kiraly is known as the best v-baller. EVER, in the history of the WORLD.

America FUCK YEAH. We dominate even in sports we're not known for.

One thing about women's volleyball that bugged me is that the announcers always made reference to the girls "getting stuffed."

Seriously, I don't want to know about the team's off-court hotel antics. Just tell me about the GAME.

What's also significant is that US athletes won in sports where they're not expected to excel (for example, mid- and long-distance track). Of course there were also some disappointments (e.g., US women being eliminated by Sweden in soccer, US women losing to Serbia in women's volleyball, US men losing to Italy in men's volleyball, US track team getting DQ'd in 4x100 relay, Gatlin missing the 200m final, etc.) , but of course we can't win them all. All in all, a superb performance by the US athletes.

Oh, I'm sorry, please forgive me. Only YOU are allowed to express any kind of understanding for Blacks in America. Any Whites who are sympathetic are just "warrioring". Well how far would you have gotten without our support? That's probably what you don't want to be reminded about.

Hey, you wanna go it alone, you're welcome to it. I thought part of Dr. King's strategy, and that of other Black civil rights leaders, was to have White allies. I lived through that era as a young man. I saw it unfold before me. When you were born Dr. King already had been assassinated years earlier. And forming non-gay alliances is a necessary strategy for US gays, too, since we are a small minority, and need our supporters.

But it you wanna insult your allies that's your privilege. You're one angry, hateful character. A Black version of the White Teabagger "get off my lawn" old guys who are fueling Donald Trump. So are you in HIS camp, or in a camp of your own? Because if you're in his you're gonna be in for a serious disappointment, whether he wins or loses.

84 was the boycott Olympics. So no, that doesn't count.

Remember, the U.S. was so mad that Russia invaded Afghanistan. How dare they invade another country!!!

Lets give a bunch of muslim fanatics grenades and training, that can't go wrong. Ever.

1984 was in Los Angeles. So not boycotted by the US. And considered a great triumph, the first time real "mega shows" were part of the Games.

Well, if you wanna wow people just let Hollywood do it. The hosts of Games since have been trying to exceed that mark. And some have since succeeded.

But the new standard was set in the LA Games of 1984. That the US most definitely did not boycott, its athletes swept the medal count.

And now that it's over, I see that Great Britain won 1 MORE Gold than China, but was a close third in the total medal count.

Correct, 1980 in Moscow was boycotted, although Russia led a boycott of communist countries in retaliation in 1984, which probably helped your medal count (in the field events anyway, what with the rather butch "female" east European athletes doped up to the eyeballs not going).

In using homophobic slurs on a gay website you're just confirming your troll credentials. This site really needs some moderation and a good de-trolling.
