NYT: Older people tend to be happier than younger people, and their happiness increases with age, a study in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry reports.

Researchers contacted 1,546 people ages 21 to 99 via random telephone calls and found that older age was, not surprisingly, tied to declines in physical and cognitive function. But it was also associated with higher levels of overall satisfaction, happiness and well-being, and lower levels of anxiety, depression and stress. The older the person, the study found, the better his or her mental health tended to be.

I'll admit that aging seems to be one pain-in-the-butt challenge after another, but there are a couple of things that are better. For one thing I don't care about 90% of the insignificant crap that used to bug me, and that's a relief. Maybe I just no longer have the energy or stamina to think about all that or maybe my priorities have changed, either way it's ok with me. Another thing is that my sense of humor is better. Whether I laugh or cry it's not going to change anything so I might as well find it funny. In retrospect, most of life is funny but when I was younger I didn't really see it the way I'm able to now.
