As Valentine's Day approaches, I'm reminded of a love...

We were 1500 miles apart when we dated, traveling back and forth each month in turn, sometimes by plane, and other times I rode my motorcycle to his place. Back home, I sent him these lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Burton Lane. I thought they best expressed my growing feelings for him, and the great distance that separated us. It was kind of my proposal, and he later told me it was what finally won his heart.

When we made it official and moved into a home together, I bought him a piano as a "wedding" gift, because he was an accomplished pianist and singer. And the day we moved in, I sat at his new piano to play and sing that same song to him, that had "sealed the deal." Here are the lyrics, and below is a recording by singer Audra McDonald. Not quite my range, but gives an idea of the melody. Please read these lyrics closely to appreciate.

Too late now to forget your smile
The way we cling when we danced awhile
Too late now to forget and
    Go on to someone new

Too late now to forget your voice
The way one word makes my heart rejoice
    Too late now to imagine
    Myself away from you

All the things we've done together
    I relive when we're apart
    All the tender fun together
    Stays on in my heart

How could I ever close the door
And be the same as I was before?
Darling, no, no I can't anymore
    It's too late now

Aw... I always enjoy your stories of lost loves, Vespa. icon_smile.gif

This is the song that reminds me of my first deep love. I played this for him right before I moved away... and for the first few months we were apart, I couldn't listen to it without weeping uncontrollably.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
    What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
    What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
    Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me, me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun
And count every beautiful thing we can see
    Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me, me

What a curious life we have found here tonight
There is music that sounds from the street
There are lights in the clouds
    Anne's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
    Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees, trees

    Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
Now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winters clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name

    What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round' the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
    I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

Here's a video of Jeff Mangum, lead singer of NMH, singing the song.

    Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Yeah, I do manage to have so many of them, don't I? icon_razz.gif

But then, are we not gay? Or, am I not me? I have no idea how much of my life is a gay thing, or a stupid ME thing. Or perhaps a bit of both?

In any case, I join you in wishing everyone, a Happy Valentine's Day! icon_biggrin.gif
