For fun, Miami Beach. For culture, Chicago.

If you want the taste of America, Miami is more Latin American; Chicago is Midwest USA.

Miami Beach is art deco, Chicago is the birthplace of modern architecture.

    But winter in Chicago? Yikes.

Have a nice time in Miami.

Are you well travelled in Europe? I see you're from Finland. If you know big cities well, then Miami/Miami Beach would probably be something different from what you've experienced. Great architecture, giant yachts, South Beach crazy, fat food, you could even easily drive up to Palm Beach and see the mansions. Haulover Beach (gay, nude), Viscaya House, just lots to see assuming you will have a rental car.

Chicago in late December can be either really tolerable or horrible. If it's average temperature, you can walk around, especially on Michigan Avenue and enjoy all the Christmas lights and store window decorations. The city Christmas tree was moved last year from Daley Plaza to Millenium Park. Chicago has fantastic restaurants of every type of food, and tons of cultural things to do. It just depends on you. Do you want to wear a coat, hat, gloves and a scarf on your visit? In that case come to Chicago. If you would rather wear a swimsuit/boardshorts, shorts, flip flops and t-shirts, go to Miami.

Being a southerner, we usually go north for Christmas and Christmas in Chicago was magical. NY is great, too, but if I'm looking for a white Christmas, Chicago is the place. Montreal, too.

You should visit San Diego instead of Miami.

I'd pick Chicago if I were you. Since I like arts, culture and I heard that Chicago has some of the cutest midwest guys.
lol But yeah, if you like the beach culture, go to Miami or SoCal, go to Chicago for the culture and arts and cute guys.
