NYT: In general, you can never be too old to donate blood. Though you can be too young or too thin.

Blood donors may also be rejected for other reasons, including intravenous drug use or a history of certain infections or travel to areas where certain infections are common. The Food and Drug Administration also bars men who have had sex with men within the past year from donating blood.

I doubt it. Age is irrelevant for the most part. It is health condition that is the determining factor.

Yes, the FDA finally lifted their lifetime ban on gay men, and will gladly take your blood if you haven't had sex in more than a year.

But the American Red Cross - the people who actually take your blood - will still reject any man who has had sex with a man, even once, at any time since 1977.

So, you can't be too old to donate blood, but you can be too gay to donate blood.

I am currently 54... 3 years ago, I tried to give blood for a very close friend's daughter who had leukemia. It was a local blood drive for this young girl, 8 yo at the time. I was told that I was too old, that they were looking for anyone up to age 50, which they told me was the cut off age. Several other friends who are also over 50, tried as well to give blood for this little girl. They too were sent away with the same information... And it never got to the point of asking if I was gay or not...
