Worst year for crime was back in 1990. We are not at that level today. no one knows why but some cities are becoming unsafe and others are becoming safer. On the average crime is not really changing as 70 US cities report no increase in crime. Actually crime decreased in New York & Los Angeles. Even in Chicago, the 3rd largest city, expect crime increases only in a few urban areas of Chicago. Those local high crime Chicago police stations clearly need to experience some mass re-employment action; layoffs, training.

These days it's incorrect spelling that's the real problem plaguing the country.

Well, I didn't wanna be the first to say...

But I do actually see an upturn in gun violence. I know the NRA says the problem could be solved if we were all packing, even kids to their schools.

I rather think we'd see an outbreak of the "Shootout at the OK Corral" scenario throughout the US, and the death toll would climb. Strange that the rest of world, which has strong gun restrictions, has a much lower gun injury & death rate.

But facts don't influence the agenda of the gun nuts. They only want us to believe their self-serving and unproven theories about the safety of unlimited gun proliferation.

^ That was an interesting article. The theory posited that the elimination of leaded gas and introduction of the Clean Air Act creating a notable decrease in human aggression was fascinating . I've never read about that before.

As always, leave it to those out of touch liberal fascists who will never be satisfied unless absolute perfection is achieved. Talk about ignoring the facts. Oh, the irony of it all. icon_lol.gif

All this really means is that urban communities are "recovering" from the crack epidemic when America's public enemy number one in the United States was drug abuse. The rhetoric changed when the propagandist war on drugs shifted towards the propagandist war on terror. Federal prison population still spiked 790 percent since 1980 and now there's a propagandist war on guns. What America needs right now wake up and break the urge to feed our national addiction to war.

It is interesting the way our culture's attitude toward violence has changed dramatically in the past few decades. It used to be "a punch in the nose" was considered to be a standard reaction to someone speaking out of turn. Hawaiian Punch had an iconic ad campaign built around a character who went around hitting people for no reason. The Three Stooges appeared on TV daily during after-school hours. These days, it's considered horrendously criminal to strike anyone, for almost any reason.

The 1928 stage play The Front Page centered on an escaped murderer and the reporters who defended him by saying he shouldn't be held responsible for his crime - he'd gotten drunk and fired a pistol at a figure in the dark who happened to be a police officer, and happened to die. Many film adaptations have been made. In the most recent one , Switching Channels (1988 ) with Burt Reynolds and Kathleen Turner, in an attempt to concoct a justifiable homicide they had the "murderer" kill the drug dealer who was responsible for his daughter's death. A far cry from the original's "He was drunk; it could happen to anyone!"

^ This big difference is that we (the U.S. And Canada) now live in a society that no longer accepts that something bad could have happened as the result of an accident. "Someone" is always at fault and can be made to pay. We can thank having too many lawyers for that.

When I was younger the focus was on intent: did you intend to harm someone, or was it completely obvious to a regular person that harm would occur. Now, it is sufficient to say it was merely plausible. Ergo, nothing is an accident anymore.

In much the same way we have quickly zoomed into a world where shocked outrage is the new normal at perceived transgressions, whether it be politically incorrect speech or overt aggression ("How dare you get offended that I called you a [racist/misogynist/whatever]!").

No wonder college-age kids seem to be such sensitive snowflakes. They've grown up believing that group-think is not only desirable but socially correct. Holding a diverse opinion against the majority has become not just politically incorrect but effectively a hostile attack on "right thinking" people.

crime rates go down, because the population is AGING, and FATTENING. The elderly seldom go on rampages or brawl in bars, and fat people really are not running after anyone and easily avoided.
