British scientists could be on the brink of creating a cure for HIV

Scientists and doctors from five leading British universities teamed up to design the cure. 50 people took part in a trial of the treatment and one patient is showing signs that he might be cured.

The 44 year old man’s early tests failed to detect any trace of HIV in his system. However, those working on the trial programme expect to wait for a few months longer before confirming whether the treatment has worked fully.

The newly developed therapy differs from other HIV treatments because it targets dormant cells in order to destroy HIV in every part of the body.

If the tests prove to be successful it could become a permanent cure for HIV.

    I read about this earlier.

I doubt it would end the stigma associated with HIV. People with an Undetectable viral load are still blamed for spreading HIV. At least with the idiots here on RJ. HIV is still an illness that can land you in prison no matter if you are undetectable, use condoms or both. Even a cure won't be safe enough for them. Undetectable = Non-Infectious. But that's deaf to Art Deco and Sydney.

Lets say they call it "ABC" Deco will say "they are liars!" " They just want to have BB sex!" "if you don't use condoms it's not really safe!" "what about STIs!" 'how do we KNOW they won't be infectious again?!"
Syd will quote (but not provide a link) to early tests that show questionable results to "ABC" and say they are good only for bottoms.

Mark my words! They will still discriminate!

While being undetectable is not a cure, the effect to public health is the same: NO NEW INFECTIONS.

Well, that's nice. But then EVERYONE has a breakthrough cure for HIV. We read of one almost every month. And they all fail to be deliver.

Sorry if I'm a bit skeptical. But after countless numbers of these, I'll simply stand back and wait for tangible, verifiable results. Claim after claim has proven false, despite wild assertions of true proof.

Well, I still see HIV spreading. And if someone has a miracle cure, it isn't being well utilized. Isn't that kinda strange?

We have a miracle treatment and it's called TasP, treatment as prevention (virtually 100%). WE also have a miracle prevention called PrEP. (>96%)) It isn't being well utilized because of people like you, and your denial of it's effectiveness, use and intent AND in your persistence that condoms are the only "true safe sex". And yes that makes you kind of strange. Actually stupid. Worse is the dependency on a less effective treatment 70% (condoms) increases HIV cases.

HIV cases are down in SF 17% (255 cases last year) but hey fast track ART/TasP and encourage PrEP use. Miami is #1 up 23%

    1. Miami, Florida,
    2. New Orleans–Metairie–Ken ner, Louisiana,
    3. Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
    4. Jackson, Mississippi,
    5. Washington, D.C.,
    6. Baltimore–Towson, Maryland,
    7. Memphis, Tennessee,
    8. Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Marietta, Georgia,
    9. New York City, New York,
    10. Jacksonville, Florida.

Notice that LA, San Diego and SF are not even in the top 10. WHY? Because they encourage encourage ART/PrEP that you deny.

This thread is about an HIV CURE, not an alleged prevention to justify you barebacking all you like. So who's the one who's actually stupid here, with very low reading comprehension skills?

And BTW, condoms have a higher protection rate than 70%, that you deliberately misstate to push your personal agenda. But not total protection, so that any sex with a poz guy has risks. I knowingly did it, and accepted that risk. But guys should understand that there is still a risk in all cases.

I said a MIRACLE treatment and a MIRACLE prevention.........I didn't say a cure. Because there isn't one, as of yet. It's already been said we can eliminate HIV by 2030 using the tools we already have.

TasP and PrEP Are not "alleged" they are proven to be highly effective. Again read the Partner Study. To date ZERO cases of HIV transmission from an Undetectable partner. Gay, straight, anal, vaginal....55,000 sex acts, not ONE case.

    From the CDC 2014:
It finds an overall effectiveness of 70.5% in both studies for all anal sex with a partner who has HIV. The effectiveness where the HIV-negative partner is the receptive partner is slightly higher at 72.3%. This contrasts with an approximately 80% effectiveness of consistent condom use as a prevention strategy in several meta-analyses of studies of heterosexuals.

There is no agenda! It's facts. 100% (as nearly as we can tell) verses 70.5%. If you continue to insist UNDETECTABLE is just "alleged" you are ENCOURAGING more HIV infections by 30%. Condoms were all we had in the 90s, it's time to wake up, it's 2016. We have better alternatives.

Again I ask, if condoms are so good, why do our sisters, mothers and daughters use the pill? They aren't chancing it at 80%, why should Gay men chance it at 70%? Only a fool would suggest we should use something less effective than our heterosexual cohorts. You say TasP is "Russian Roulette" when the facts are condoms are much less reliant.

Waiting for a "cure" could take years if not decades. Do what we can NOW. We have the tools.

That's vulgar. And hateful. I've been POZ since 1985. All I want is an end to this.

And it is a miracle for many of us. I've been to so many funerals I could no longer go. I easily could have been one o them. I'm on ART not PrEP, and if i had the chance in 1983 to do it I would have.....only a fool wouldn't. But you are, so what. Personally I think drug companies should be heavily regulated, if not taken over.

Why talk of a cure for HIV is premature

"The Sunday Times reported that a British man with HIV was receiving a prototype therapy designed to eradicate the virus from his body.

Early tests from the clinical trial have apparently shown no signs of the virus in his blood.

That may sound astonishing unless you know that conventional antiretroviral therapy (ART) - which the patient was also taking - already reduces HIV to undetectable levels."
