Obama's approval rating just hit its highest point in his second term — and that's a problem for Trump

President Barack Obama's approval rating hit its highest point in his second term, according to a new poll released Thursday — a fact that could provide a boost for Democrats in the stretch run of the election.

Early this year, Obama's approval rating hit 50% in the weekly average from Gallup's daily survey. As of Wednesday, it stood at 54%.

"He reminds swing voters of the basic decency they miss in politics," Schale said. "I believe a lot of the increase in his popularity of late has to do with a visceral reaction to the abrasive vitriol of Trump. They see Obama as measured and thoughtful, dare I say with the right kind of temperament to hold the rudder of a nation through the troubled global waters. His style creates an inherent contrast with Trump, and it is a contrast that benefits Clinton."

Obama's approval ratings at this point are far better than those of George W. Bush, his predecessor, off whose unpopularity Obama thrived during his 2008 run. His level is most directly comparable to that of Ronald Reagan, who in March 1988 held a 51% approval rating, according to Gallup.

Love it. And your title for the thread. And your title for the Ronald.

I was watching Michael Reagan on Lemon's show last night. He is so fed up with Trump and so sick of his family name being abused by Trumpublicans. They noted a fundraiser where Trump plans to auction off a photo of cowboy Ron. From what I've seen of Reagan's kid in the past I'd normally not care for the guy. But in watching yesterday I found myself feeling sorry for Michael, unable to protect his family name.

Now that is the risk of going public. You can participate and even influence from behind the scenes fairly safely but to reap the lavished personal "rewards", assuming that's how you view them (money, fame, "power" et al), well for that you have to go public but rarely without consequence, neither intended nor desired and some of that can be and often is quite negative in various ways.

Were Trump to successfully combine the two brands, his own boorishness with Reagan's overly-touted approval, he'd not just stand on Ronny's shoulders, he'd bury Reagan's name. Their best hope to keep that legacy alive is to assure this one never rises.

With Obama creating the Divided States of America, and about to leave the country in chaos; one doubts it.

It's about time. He's a good man who has tried to do his best for this country. There were times when he failed despite his best efforts, but no world leader could have survived a Republican-led Congress committed to blocking him at every turn, a Trump-initiated birtherist movement, and a concerted Republican effort to delegitimize his presidency.

Well stated. And if anyone created disunity in this country, as a certain Know-Nothing from Australia claims, it's been the Republicans. Part of a concerted effort to regain control of the country, no matter the cost to our present, and our future, to our economy and our world image. Ruin the Democratic President, to smooth the way for a Republican to replace him. Didn't work in 2012 with their Mitt Romney, and once again unlikely to work with Donald Trump.

The only reason people voted for Obama was to keep another Clinton out.
