Patient 0, Sexually Insatiable Flight Attendant, Didn't Cause AIDS

NYT: The virus appeared in New York as early as 1971, according to a new genetic analysis, and spread from there to San Francisco. Scientists report that the strain of H.I.V. responsible for almost all AIDS cases in the United States spread from Haiti to New York City around 1971.

In the tortuous mythology of the AIDS epidemic, one legend never seems to die: Patient Zero, aka Gaétan Dugas, a globe-trotting, sexually insatiable French Canadian flight attendant who supposedly picked up H.I.V. in Haiti or Africa and spread it to dozens, even hundreds, of men before his death in 1984.

Mr. Dugas was once blamed for sparking the entire American AIDS epidemic, which traumatized the nation in the 1980s and has since killed more than 500,000 Americans. The New York Post even described him with the headline “The Man Who Gave Us AIDS.”

But after a new genetic analysis of stored blood samples, bolstered by some intriguing historical detective work, scientists on Wednesday declared him innocent.

Everyone knows that Global Warming and Foxnews are responsible.

I still think insatiable flight attendants, especially on long flights, serve a very valuable purpose.

That said, my understanding is that humans have been dying of HIV related issues for centuries, it's just that until the late 70's no one bothered to put all the evidence together, and before the 30's there was just no way to gathered blood evidence. So, AIDS is like a cancer, been here forever, but until someone "discovered" it, everyone just assumed death was part of the deal.

To some extent true. But there may be a blurring of terms here, especially involving the first occurrences of HIV and AIDS.

The condition of a deficient immune system, that leads to fatal diseases, has indeed been around for a long time, perhaps throughout human existence. In fact, sometimes it's a medical side-effect of modern treatments against conditions like cancer.

The specific virus now called HIV, which also causes an immune system failure, subsequently labeled as AIDS when caused by HIV, is fairly new in the general population of Western countries. There may have been pockets of HIV in Africa for many years, but it never "broke out" and spread beyond Africa, from what I've read.

So this was an epidemic waiting to happen. Perhaps its spread a product of modern transportation, and the opening of the African continent to the outside world.

It's also true that gay anal sex makes participants especially susceptible to contracting HIV infection. But it's not the only way by which HIV spreads. Nevertheless, once it entered the unknowing & unprotected gay population of the late 1970s and early 1980s it spread like wildfire.

Hence gays got much of the blame for causing it. And as gays were unpopular, the outcasts of society, at least in many Western countries during that era, little was done to battle the epidemic. Exemplified by US President Reagan at that time. In fact, the attitude of many straights was: "Fine, let them die and good riddance. God's judgment on their perverted lifestyle."

Tennessee legislator Stacy Campfield will be sooooo disappointed to know this. To truly fathom his ignorance, google hs statements about the origin of AIDS and the tramsmissabilty of it among heterosexuals. And he is 21st century not 1980's!

Nice theory, but no evidence to prove it . HIV is not present in blood or tissue samples pre 70's

What I've read is that HIV evolved in a species of money, where it was relatively harmless. The monkeys were eaten by humans who were triyng to avoid starvation. So imagine an alien being infected by the common cold - the effects could have nothing to do with what we've experienced as the common cold (yes, I am aware that there are many types of this virus).
Also, a virus does not 'spontaneously evolve in the 70s'. If you think that a species did not exist pre 70s, you need to grab an evolutionary biology book and get your facts from there. I would get my facts from peer reviewed and widely accepted science, not some US legislator with a deep voice.
