There should be a "Gay Martyr Day"

Inspired by munchingzombie's "A year ago this week, Lawrence King was murdered." thread, I think there should be a "Gay Martyr Day" established. A day to recall to America how gay have been murdered only for being gay. I think the general public would recoil from the thought of gay being killed just for being gay....and that that feeling of revulsion would begin to carry over to all gay discrimination.

Which day of the year should it be?

Unless "Gay Martyr Day" gets everyone a day off from work, the general public won't care.

I disagree. I think it would raise their consciousness and care would naturally follow.

Thanks for pointing that out just before I did Sedative. We ceertainly don't need 2 days to mark the tragedies; we just need to unite behind the one.

I am completely and utterly shocked that I did not know about that.

Yes I think we do need a day and a vocal one at that.

I dont think silence is the method too call such atttention. I am thinking more of a day when the martyrdom is expressed out loud and made known.

Caslon is right, Silence is a wrong word and it’s something we shouldn't be doing. We should be making our voices heard over this matter.

It could be called something as strongly as "Against Hatred" or "Pride's Lost". It could be a holiday where it started out to speak up against being murdered for being gay, to being murdered to discriminated and victimized by hate.

"Pride's Lost" would bring awareness of our departed gay and lesbian family to not our community but to the public as well.

I think "Gay Martyr Day" is strong, striking, and unambiguous!

9/11. The day America changed, and so did the world. Mark it as a day for change.
