Facebook terms-of-service controversy...what about RJ?

If you've been following today's net flare-up over the implications of Facebook's recent changes to its terms of service, you might want to read RealJock's terms on the same issue:

You represent and warrant that by Posting Content to the Website that you grant, and have the right to grant, RealJock an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, fully paid, worldwide license to use, copy, perform, display and distribute such Content and that RealJock may prepare any derivative work of or incorporate into other work, such Content, and that you grant to RealJock and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing.

Not out at work or with family? It may be a bit worrisome to have a company have perpetual (i.e. even after you delete your account) rights to use/display/distribute your photos (including the "private" ones?) and other uploaded information without notice or permission. RJ does need certain rights in order to make the service work, and there is nothing extraordinary or nefarious about RJ's terms of service. But the simplicity, absoluteness, and ambiguity of the language are all heavily tilted toward RJ and away from the privacy and ownership of its members/

Not an issue for this member who TimeOut Dubai described in 2007 as "a personified social slut on Facebook" icon_cool.gif

i don't at all like the perpetual/irrevocable terms in the license, but i'm here. i find it more tolerable since i talk with RJ staff a fair bit and i always get a friendly and personal response. it's awful, but i will let a friend get away with a lot. regardless, i own all my photos and retain the rights to them forever unless i specifically give them away.

I'm starting to believe iguanaSF's (Flying Spaghetti Monster bless his soul) assertion that Facebook is evil. MEH!

Boarder, nice catch. It's hard to imagine who's going to pay Facebook or RealJock for all that data about me, especially long after I have deleted my account, but the fact remains I signed up and gave'm permission to do it.

The web designers succeed in making these online communities feel so private, while collecting all my data and trying to sell it. I'm pissed off, but not quite pissed off enough to delete my facebook or RJ accounts.

agreed. i'm just waiting for the bulletin: "Pay to be an RJ Supporter within the next 18 hours or we will release your pics on www.wanttoknowifyouremployeeisgay.com". but life is full of small risks.
