Risk of Dementia for People Who Sleep 9 Hours or More

    NYT: Older adults who started sleeping more than nine hours a night — but had not previously slept so much — were at more than double the risk of developing dementia a decade later than those who slept nine hours or less, researchers report.

    The increased risk was not seen in people who had always slept more than nine hours.

    “We’re not suggesting you go wake up Grandpa. We think this might be a marker for the risk of dementia, not a cause” of the illness, said Dr. Sudha Seshadri.

    Alzheimer's is a type of dementia which can be inherited. Sleep Loss Precedes Alzheimer's Symptoms. Who brags about not sleeping much and had a father with Alzheimers:

    Be sure to read the article carefully. The extra time sleeping is likely an early symptom of possible Alzheimer's, not the cause of it.

    I appreciate cause & effect. I always was told that the older you got, the less you slept. As a kid I slept very long when I could, on weekends and summer school break - 12 hours or more, even 9 or 10 on school days. I figured it was an effect of the growing process.

    Nowadays at 68 my typical sleep length is 6 hours. Longer if I physically worked hard or I'm sick. I assume my body is repairing, restoring, or healing. A normal reaction.

    Also no dementia or Alzheimer's in any family generation. If anything, I was always impressed how my oldest relatives remained sharp as tacks into late old age. What took them was their bodies, never their minds. I hope I've got those genes.
