I've had success dropping a few kilos in the past by ramping up the frequency and variety of my workouts (running, swimming, weights) but that's not working anymore.

What are your best tricks for dropping a couple kilos quickly? My current method of giving up alcohol cold turkey has working but as soon as I have a few drinks I gain it right back

Diets don't work. Just as with your alcohol, a diet that isn't sustainable will stop working if you return to old patterns of eating and exercise. Get an app that can monitor your eating and be honest. Eat good, quality foods and no junk and especially no sugar in anything. But watch portion control. Keep your calories to about 2,500 and make sure you don't drop off in exercise but maintain a good, sustainable level of exercise that you enjoy. Eat lots of protein, whether a shake (watch the calories- should be 31 grams of protein and no more than about 150 calories) or prepared meat (limit to no more than less than a half pound). That will feed your strength exercises and dull your hunger. It is nothing but calories in minus calories expended. Eat nothing white except cauliflower. You won't drop as fast as a crash diet/exercise program but you also won't hit a goal and then immediately start gaining it all back. Find the diet and exercise mix that you can live with the rest of your life or at least until your body does one of its periodic metabolism shifts. Pick your target weight and aim for it at the rate of a pound or two per week. Set interim goals. Give yourself a modest cheat meal every week. I do one cheat dinner plus one cheat breakfast usually on Saturday. Never, ever pig out.

Thanks guys. Good tips. I was rereading a similar post from last year and Paleo diet came up then too. Better look into it.

No carbs? Is that the cauliflower-only advice, essentially? I do eat a lot of rice.

Also, getting enough sleep. Had a naturopath tell me that recently too in connection with weight loss. I need to get better at that. Fortunately it's something I love to do!

Ya, basically. You can have some rice but not white. White rice has had the exterior hull removed leaving the soft pulp only. It converts immediately into sugar. Brown rice with the huil on is much harder for your system to digest so the energy required offsets (somewhat) the energy of the carb. Still, limit even the brown and if ya gotta eat white, do it only when you will follow with a seriously hard workout to burn off the sugar. If you eat a lot of rice, just try eliminating it for a while and unless you substitute something else bad like pasta, I bet you'll lose those kilos. Same applies to pasta-- white is bad, grain is good. If I eat pasta, I'll only do it at lunch, before my afternoon activity and gym. Same with potatoes. White is bad. No french fries! (Or at least not often.) Try to figure out some pattern of eating you can live with that drastically reduces bad carbs but gives you the energy you need. White=candy.
