I think if you live in a country where it condemned to be gay whether under the carpet or an open hostility to homosexuality (which is practically more or less everywhere). The act of coming out becomes its own political resistance.

As long as that right wing fascist Vladimir Putin is in charge and those primitive minded lunatics from the Russian Orthodox Church influence public policy, Russia is going to remain in a powerful grip of homophobia.

Belonging to Greek Orthodox Church, that is true. Any religious groups being homosexual is big no no to them. We need to kick Vladimir Putin and his regime out...

The sad fact of the matter is that a large percentage of Russian nationals have been brainwashed by Vladimir Putin's bullshit which has caused Russia to regress on most things except its military might.

The thing is you cannot suppress the basic freedom of belief. Sure, The Russian Orthodox Church enjoyed a heightened official status during the reign of Russian Empire but it has all gone downhill from there. The Bolsheviks, who established the Soviet Union saw the Church as the symbol of aristocracy and autocracy of the empire. This is why clamping down on religion was big part in Soviet Union. Now, the Church is a symbol with a cause and people are coming out stronger to claim that identity. The Church has usurp power, vacuumed by Soviets in the early 1990s. Although, the corrupt power hungry officials simply changed their tune from singing the songs of USSR to religious hymns. These people are still in power like Putin.

Similarly, Holocaust didn't end up killing the Jewish belief. If anything, it only ended up strengthening the singularity of Jewish identity in shared suffering.

There was also a big clamp down on religion during the reign of Shah Pahlavi. The forces of Ruhollah Khomeini were able to take control because a large section saw itself as a victim of religious suppression [only to realise (during the Iran-Iraq war) that Khomeini didn't give two hoots about them].

In USA, something similar is happening too. A large part of USA is filled with towns that never had their economy diversified. They were dependent on single factory or plant and the economy collapsed once the factory was shut or relocated. These towns decayed with poverty, violence and collapse of social system. They saw their messiah in Trump, who played on these sentiments and because Hilary Clinton was ridden with an image of an establishment candidate. The democrats have ignored them and republicans have exploited them (asking to be taken care of their health is not seen as a basic human right but a socialist fantasy of established city people). Donald Trump is a result of this suppression, disdain and exploitation.

It is not only because Vladimir, but religious leaders brainwashed Russian people. To them being gay is not normal, because Eastern culture believe men and women should get marry and start a family. They are more as a family unit or group-oriented than individualistic. Family is very important role in many countries especially in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
