Here's one I'd forgotten, from years ago. A female sales rep came to Wilton Manors, and stopped into Georgi's Alibi around noon. When George still owned it. She wanted lunch, that they served.
I was having lunch, too, at the bar. My husband worked in Fort Lauderdale at that time, so I often ate alone. She sat next to me and said hello, and asked me if the stories she'd heard about Wilton Manors were true, mostly a gay place.
I replied yes, most of the guys around her, whom I know, are gay. So is the bartender. "Really??? They don't look gay!"
"Trust me, this is a gay club. But straights are welcome. I'm gay myself."
"You are??? You don't act or sound gay!" I assured her I was, and told her that stereotypes about gays were false, meant to degrade us. And then I asked her what she wanted to do in WM. She told me, so I gave her a list of potential contacts. Business names, locations, their owners and manager names as contacts. Gold information in her work.
She thanked me, still not believing I'm gay. I wanted to make a good impression on a straight person. The chances it made any permanent difference are slim. She probably voted for Trump, and will support Republican anti-gay legislation.
Today I've kinda written-off accommodation, education & reasonable negotiation, and think only stronger confrontation will produce results. Why not? Everything else has failed with these people. Can't be worse than where we're finding ourselves today in the increasingly regressive US.
