4 foods that may not be as bad for you as you thought

    Or more accurately, as we've been TOLD for years. Which is why we've come to think they are.

    I've been reading about this gradual change the last several years, as each of these foods, and others, have returned to respectability. I already eat all of them, although not regular coffee, because of sensitivity to caffeine. I also don't drink colas for that reason, and tea only in moderation.

    Of course, always being skeptical, and having seen these flip-flops before, sometimes many reversals on 1 food item alone, it wouldn't surprise me if the pendulum swings back in a few years. But for now I eat them, and my cholesterol and other health factors seem none the worse for it. If anything, albeit from a subjective perspective, I feel healthier and more energetic.

    These 4 foods are eggs, full-fat dairy products, coffee, and peanuts & peanut butter. In fact yesterday I ate 3 from this category, except for the coffee. Here's the full article:

    I wasn't aware pie was in any bad group. Perhaps if the filling has a lot of sugar, and preservatives in commercial pies. I make the filling for our apple pies, we do about 8 at a time, and it's pretty simple, with fresh apples I peel and core myself.

    It does require sugar, both white and brown, and butter, and I'd have to check the recipe for anything else. But certainly no preservatives, it's the classic old-fashioned kind they made over 100 years ago. Including the crust, that he makes from flour.

    As for ice cream, if it's not heavily loaded with flavorings and additives, maybe a plain vanilla, it might fit into the "full-fat dairy products" category mentioned. Therefore perhaps you can have an apple pie, a la mode no less, with no fears.

    I dunno about bacon. We rarely have it, anyway. And when I do cook bacon it's in the microwave, on a device that allows the grease to drip away, rather than letting the strip sizzle in it.

    Chips are also problematic, especially for both of us watching our salt intake. We never have them, don't miss them. And kinda pricey for what you get. For snacks I get unshelled peanuts, or walnuts when I can also get them in the shell.

    Not always. Eggs were associated with high blood cholesterol. That was identified as causing heart disease.

    Today that risk has been largely discounted. Eating eggs in moderation is good, a source of protein. We eat no more than about 2 eggs a week, boiled, rarely pan fried. Done as poached, soft or hard boiled, even scrambled in the microwave (lemme tell yah how).

    Peanut butter was thought to contain unhealthy fats. That's also been largely discounted. Plus today there's a concern about alergic reactions.

    Odd. In the 1950s almost every kid ate peanut butter. I didn't notice any of them keeling over dead, and no one else died, either. Either peanuts have changed in the last 60 years, or kids have gotten weaker. Or perhaps more hypochondriac.

    A mystery to me why peanuts and peanut butter were a common staple 60 years ago, yet today they are toxic to some.

    I've maintained for years that butter popcorn is a health food... Healthy fat plus high fiber carbs. Got to make it yourself, though, no bagged microwave stuff. (As yet, no one believes me.)

    I wouldn't touch microwaved popcorn - poison. I've got a machine that stirs the kernels over a covered hot plate. I generally use soybean oil, and Orville Redenbacker popcorn. Good results. Then I add salt and hot melted butter.

    Change 47, as we used to say in the Army. I opened the fridge and saw the 6 ears of corn he bought on sale at Lucky's this morning. I like to use fresh veggies quickly, so I shucked and cleaned 2 of them. Put them in a rectangular Corelle bowl I bought just for this purpose.

    It's got a fitted plastic lid, that I left a little loose for steam to escape. Slathered them with butter, put 'em in the microwave, et voila! Perfect corn. Not popcorn, but still corn for him.

    He was delighted, a surprise treat. One for him, one for me. I've had sweeter, but not bad. Some foods cook very well in a microwave, especially certain vegetables. Like corn and potatoes, and various veggies in sealed "steam fresh" plastic bags from US companies like Birds Eye: peas, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and carrots, for instance.

    The result is very similar to steaming, preserving the essential taste, that I like. If you want the additional taste of sautéing in different ingredients, or other cooking methods, then of course these microwave bags aren't for you.
