Subconscious Eating Habits

I have really been enjoying NPR's Podcast The Hidden Brain:
    Subconscious Eating Habits
    - People eat less served small portions on larger tables.
    - Women eat more when they eat with women and less when they sat with men.
    - Men eat a lot more calories when eating with women.
    - Stressed out, or choosing something last minute, more likely to choose something unhealthy.
    - Eating the same food, same calories each day. Half the group ate half the calories for breakfast. The other group ate half the calories at dinner. Eating 1400 calories a day, the big dinner group lost an average of 7 pounds. The big breakfast group lost an average of 17 pounds, also reduced their waistline more than the other group, and even had drops in glucose, glycerin, and triglycerides: high levels of which can lead to metabolic problems.
    - Get children to eat healthy foods by emphasizing how tasty they are, not the benefits of how healthy they are.
    - Customers being served by a server with a high body mass is 4 times more likely to order dessert. They also ordered more alcohol. The BMI of the customers did not matter.

Here is episode 33, Food For Thought

I think they probably mean Subconscious Eating Habits.

I rarely eat when I'm unconscious.

    Hidden Brain indeed! Ha!

    LOL! An elegant semantic distinction.

Still, a worthwhile bit of information from metta. I've always understood that heavy meals eaten later in the day are less helpful to weight loss. And late night snacks just before bed are the bane of any weight loss program.

The eating patterns are curious, as well. I almost always eat with men. I'll have to watch if I eat more when there's sometimes a woman present.

My parents always had raw vegetables as treats when I was little. They didn't forbid sweets, and I would buy candy on my own when walking or biking home from school. And at Halloween and Easter I would OD on chocolate.

But to this day (like yesterday's house party), fresh veggies are what I love to snack. And I decline the heavy, fatty dips with them. Just eaten raw and plain. Like when I was a kid.
