PepsiCo announced Wednesday morning a multiyear distribution deal with the makers of the energy drink Rockstar, prompting calls among gay rights activists for a company-wide boycott.

Rockstar was co-created by Dr. Michael Weiner, better known as conservative radio host Michael Savage, who has often broadcast antigay tirades, referring to gay callers as “sodomites” who should “get AIDS and die.”

His equally conservative wife, Janet, serves as the company’s CFO, while his son Russell -- cofounder of the Paul Revere Society, which campaigns for the deportation of all illegal immigrants -- serves as the CEO.

Savage has been equally outspoken on issues including abortion and autism, once defining an autistic child as “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.”

Earlier this year, it was the antigay American Family Association calling for a boycott of PepsiCo after the company donated a combined $1 million to the Human Rights Campaign and Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

"We were indeed surprised by PepsiCo's support of the homosexual group," the AFA's Donald E. Wildmon wrote in October about the $500,000 donation to PFLAG. "It would appear to us that PepsiCo would not involve itself in a political and culture war, especially supporting an organization seeking to redefine marriage and family."

A statement released by PepsiCo today said of the deal with the energy drink manufacturer: "Rockstar is a major milestone in our bid to become the undisputed category leader in energy drinks. We're moving assertively to the front of the energy drink pack." (Ross von Metzke, Advocate.com)

I find this upsetting because PepsiCo has stood up for gay rights in the past and gone above and beyond the call for equality in the work place. This is a huge step backwards.

I'm more of a coffee person but I think i'll be mixing my vodka with Red Bull from now on.

I know about this guy, and will never drink another Pepsi product again. Plus I'll boycott their other brands, including Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Tropicana, and Quaker Oats. I'll also make sure they have no sponsorship involvement in the 2009 SMART Ride in support of AIDS charities (Gatorade and similar sports drinks being interested in the exposure).

This is the kind of Conseverative that gives Conservatives a bad name. Where ignorance meets insensitivity and produces inane statements.

As far as I know Coca Cola has distributed Rockstar here in the past i'm not sure if they still hold those rights in Canada.. if thats the case I wont be drinking very many mixed drinks anymore (about the only time I drink pop).

Another example of how companies only go so far until their's a buck to be made they'll sell their soul and sleep with Satan.

I'm not giving up my Mountain Dew .

PepesiCo is making a business decision for the financial health of the company. Part of a distribution deal could entail shared transport logistics. Meaning less trucks and less wasted fuel and emissions as product is spread around the country.

No more Pepsi products for me.....and I love Pepsi !!!!!! ...But I am not supporting such a decision, even if it was done for a business reason.

Slavery was maintained for a business reason.

Ok, now I am confused. ...I found this on 365 Gay:

"Anti-gay group calls for Pepsi boycott

(New York City) The conservative social action group American Family Association has made Pepsi Cola the latest target in its ongoing boycotts of what it calls “pro-homosexual” companies.

The AFA, in an Action Alert to its more than two-million members, urges supporters to sign an online pledge to boycott Pepsi products and to call the company to tell it “to stop promoting the homosexual agenda.”

“PepsiCo has refused a request by AFA to remain neutral in the culture war,” the Action Alert said.

“In the last two years, Pepsi has given $500,000 to the Human Rights Campaign and $500,000 to the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. The $1,000,000 was to be used to help promote homosexuality in the workplace,” the AFA said.

“Pepsi refuses to give money to any pro-family organization that opposes the homosexual agenda. Plus, every homosexual organization we know of is overwhelmingly pro-abortion,” according to the Action Alert. ....

Shucks, now I don't know what to do.

Okay, I'm gonna sign the AFA online petition.
    Sincerely,
    -Maya Jen Italia

PS: news to me: I would have thought non-breeders were relatively ambivalent about abortions

Pepsi products kill people, from the sodas all the way to the fried chicken, pizza, and double stuffed beefy tacos or whateverthefuck. The company is run/funded by the Mormons who won't even consume this crap themselves. Hmm.

I hope homophobes like Savage see the increasing appeal of this brand to their demographic, consume more of Pepsi's shit, and die off earlier than they would otherwise. Maybe then we can finally become the country we were meant to be.

Remember, Pepsi products are primarily designed to take the surplus from government subsidized commodities (corn, soybeans, and even petroleum by-products), and turn it into something that resembles food, but is actually not. The "value" is in the convenience and packaging, not what's contained inside.

That was a pretty brash comment about autism. He needs god smacked on that one.

I don't drink soda anymore, but my guilty pleasure is Taco John's--which is owned by Pepsi. The vegan bean burritos are delicious and cheap!

So are people say they're boycotting Pepsi are they boycotting only the soda company or the whole shabangabang?

We'll you could boycott there key brands.. Like Pepsi and Diet Pepsi.. there billion dollar brands.

The hardest boycott I ever had to face was P&G.. thous fuckers own EVERYTHING!

Also I think I saw it mentioned in here before but PepsiCo does no longer own Taco Bell, Pizza Hut and KFC, they were spun off into YUM! brands Inc.. so you can still have your guilty pleasures.. just not the soda.. they all or most have pepsi contacts. Like the resturant I went to tonight..

Yeah, it would take way too much time/energy to boycott all of the Proctor & Gamble products. You'd have to carry around a list of what NOT to buy that's probably a lot bigger than the list of items you're actually going to buy lol

Never knew someone could be such a tool. If I was around someone that said that, I would trip out on them, hopefully someone would come and restrain me before I punched the @#$%er out. A comment like that is inexcusable. That's without all the anti-gay stuff spewing from his mouth. Jeese. Guess I'm gonna stay away from Pepsi stuff. Luckily I never drank Rockstar, and never gonna after this!

...or you could just pick a non-P&G brand you like and be loyal to it. It's easier to pick one then try to avoid 1000.

I think you might have to be a creature of habit in these instances though. Your results may vary.

It's very hard because P&G own so many brands you'd have to look on the back of everything you pick up.. And when they bought Gillette back in 2006 that did it for me.

Though I mostly use Unilever products these days.

I'm not a Pepsi guy too much, but I do enjoy my Tropicana and Mountain Dew every now and then...and Frito-Lay is pretty hard to avoid, but I'll definitely be avoiding any Pepsi or Pepsi-related products from now on.

It's probably better for all of us anyway...I mean, aren't we about staying in shape? Pepsi's proliferation of corn syrup isn't helping any of us...
