I dont know about the "cheaper" part because Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle are outrageously expensive cities.

My mother and Dad were snowbirds in Apache Junction and they had a big Wal Mart and almost everything was cheaper in price there then our Wal-Marts here in Wisconsin. We have a high gas tax here in Wisconsin, so gas is also cheaper there. But the health care is very bad there in the Phoenix area. They over medicate you there, so you stay sick. My mother and dad won't go back to Arizona anymore for this reason because they get much better medical care here in Wisconsin. My mother was so sick in Arizona and the doctors here in Wisconsin said it is because of all the medications she was taking. They took her off of half of the medications she was on and she instantly got better and feels great now.

Believe me if I wasnt in poverty and had paid time off, I would come down for a week. But thanks to supply side/trickle down economics, low wage parttime employment is the overwhelming norm in this new economy.

What do you do? Is there really no jobs in the area? Sounds bad.

Ex_Mil8 saidThat's great if you like heat and almost constant sunshine. I don't. I lived in a hot climate for 4 years and I've been deployed to various hot and sandy places over the years. No thanks.

It is currently 10°C (50°F) here in SW England, which is just fine.

Sounds like Seattle Wash? No sunshine seems depressing? I liked England, but I froze to death in July. lol
I stayed in Swindon, cool place and I love Bath England too.

I need to dispel a misconception about Seattle weather. It rains here but it's usually a soft mist or a drizzle. It's doesn't pour here like it does in Chicago which is where I'm from. I once experienced a heavy rainstorm last Spring in Seattle but that is very rare.

In Seattle, come May it is very sunny and we have droughts during the summer. It usually doesn't rain from about May through October. So even though it "drizzles" from October through April it becomes a dessert here in the summer. Last summer was more dry than normal. Sadly, a lot of trees died due to the severe dry summer. I've been here for five years and last summer was the driest we've ever experienced in that time.

I like having a change in seasons and the Pacific Northwest is an area where you can experience that without extreme temperature fluctuations. But the constant drizzle and drain for seven months can be a bit much. This past Monday we had a sunny day and it was nearly 60 degrees. That was a nice break from the wet winters we normally have.

We haven't had supply side policies for decades, certainly not in the past 8 years with Obama.

Naked hikes and walks all over the place. Sick of shoveling the snow yet?

Escape if you can and visit this Grand place.

Chicago is in day 6 of an arctic cold snap. When you walk outside you have to have a scarf around your face because it is so bitter cold. I had the scarf, plus my fur lined hood covering my head when I came back from the grocery store a few minutes ago. I've lived here all my life but am sick of the winters here. As soon as I am able I am saying bye bye to the Midwest and hello to Palm Springs, California or possibly Phoenix, Arizona. I would rather deal with intense heat than extreme cold.

Just the opposite here. I moved from Chicago because I couldn't stand the summer heat. Too many August days around 100 degrees. I never minded the cold - one just puts on warm clothes if it's cold - but if it's hot, there's nothing to do to stop sweating except to go into air-conditioned indoor space. And you can't ski if there isn't snow on the ground and freezing temperatures.

I was on the freeway today, they are not really congested and this is our top season. Not even half as bad as SO-Cal. The roads are a nightmare there!

    Hawaii, however, bad too!

    Rob,

Get out of your #shitole and Move! There're so many great employment opportunities out here. Get your resume updated, sell your stuff and get out! I like it here, but I am currently doing a move myself. I have been here in Az & So Cal for awhile now and my final destination is Hawaii.

I would not let a defeatist attitude call the shots.

I get into that defeatist attitude too, and especially when it involves a big decision.....so if that applies, then here is my advice.

When I ask myself why I doubt I can do something...the answer is always FEAR. Fear is a terrible emotion....it sits in the body, and paralyzes me from taking action. Then I find reasons to justify my lack of action. So how do I get out of this? I write down a daily step-by-step of EVERYTHING I need to do to accomplish the big thing. I fight the fear by making a conscious decision....and acting on it (most important!).

Since spring is 5 weeks away, why not start planning now to escape by next fall? Make this a detailed step-by-step plan of everything you will do. Set a date, and a location you will move to. Plan how you'll get there, where you'll stay, what employers you will approach, etc. Even the clothes you will need. Tell people your plans. Tell yourself that you are done with NY winters. This action plan shows your body that it can be done, and fear and doubt just start to loosen their grip. And definitely get creative with it, like you can remain a resident of NY, but find a way to spend 3-4 months in Florida. It's like that old question, "How do you eat an elephant?" One bite at a time.
