Uneventful car drive. A lot of Hurricane Irma damage still being cleared in the middle keys. But Key West is functioning normally, as it was when we were here in November. Except now the crowds are somewhat returned. Especially with the cold weather that’s been hitting the northern US States.

We came to support the rescheduled Smart Ride, due to Hurricane Irma. We aren’t participating directly this year, but did help raise money for some of the bicycle teams and individual riders, whom we want to see after they complete. An after-party will be in this hotel.

After years of our lobbying him, the owner of this KW hotel is riding in it himself! We had drinks with him tonight, during which he asked me for Ride tips. I eased his fears about finishing. Hell, I rode in it 3 years myself, all in my 60s, with my blue handicapped car placard on my handlebars, just to show off. A framed photo of us together that shows that is one of our favorite pics.

And this guy is about 15 years younger than me, sails his boat all the time, does the regatta to Cuba and so forth. He’s got nothing to worry about.

As for bikes, I brought my new folding one with us. It should be in its element here.

We also brought along a friend in the car, had gotten him his own room here. Another friend arrives with the Ride on Saturday, will stay with us in our second room for just 2 nights. Yet another friend has a reservation here, but his BF became hospitalized, not sure if the flu, so he may cancel.

Otherwise off to a good start. May take a ride around tomorrow morning while hubby’s having breakfast on the veranda. Do a little reconnaissance, see what’s new and interesting, things he might like to see. And confirm which of our friends are in town, while letting them know that we’re here, too.

Went bike riding and shopping today. Lots of fun! Despite the times I’ve ridden my other bike 165 miles here on the organized SMART Ride, I’ve never used that one casually around town.

Always wanted to do that, but didn’t for various reasons. I’ve been tempted to rent a bike locally on our car trips down here, but I’m more than fussy about my ride, and a heavy “newspaper boy’s” 1-speed rental bike with coaster brake wouldn’t suit me.

So this is a first for me. I’ve ridden my motorcycles around Key West, but that’s a different experience, more like a car. Gotta go with the traffic flow with them, and can’t stop anywhere when a store or something interests me, and just pull onto the sidewalk and go in.

A bicycle is a joy in Key West. No wonder they're everywhere here. Along with rental scooters, as well as some light electric rental cars, sorta like open golf carts on steroids.

Did you feel the wind blowing though your vagina, as you once did ridding your little girls scooter, the red Vesper?

And so tomorrow, Wed, 1/24, we leave Key West for home. Vacations and get-aways, short or long, are always over faster than we realize or might want. Well, unless things go really badly.

But ours went well. Good weather, good friends, good food, good times. icon_biggrin.gif

Forgot to post, to close the thread loop, that we got home Wednesday, 1-24, as planned, around 4 PM. The drive as uneventful as the one a week ago.

Now back into the usual grind. Attended a fundraiser for a mayoral campaign Thursday. Where of course they wanted (and got) money from us. Today was fairly busy, as will be tomorrow (Sat). I think Sunday may have no commitments.

But we got an email today that a friend from the Netherlands is arriving to stay with us on the 31st for a week or so. We knew that might happen, but he couldn't travel until he got his doctor's OK following an accident. Well, he's good to go per today's email.

So all my spare time until then will be spent getting his room ready, which we've been using for storage. This is a reason we go to Key West so often, to get away from this. We've even stayed at a local gay hotel only a block from us, just to avoid all these demands on us.

No one can call our house phone, or knock on our door. We ignore most cell phone calls there, having said we'll be away for a week. We're simply vague about where. icon_wink.gif
