He’s from the Netherlands, and stays with us most winters for a week or 2. No sooner unpacked our luggage than I’m now clearing the office/spare bedroom for him, where he always stays.

He was delayed due to a broken foot, or he might have spent the holidays, as he’s done before. But he apparently can’t drive a car yet, so won’t get a rental. Instead he emailed us that he’ll be using my Cannondale touring bike!

That thing is worth thousands, in mint condition, I’m not entirely happy with that arrangement. But he’s the husband’s friend, so I’m not authorized to object. And I do have the new folding bike for my own use around town here.

I also gotta see if he can use the pedals with toe clips (cages). If not I’ve gotta remove the clips if I can. The other pedal set I have is for my cleated shoes, that he definitely won’t be able to use. For one thing you can’t walk around much in them.

I may just have to buy plain platform pedals for him. Fortunately I have the wrench to do the swap.

It’s not clear to me why he can’t schedule this for when he’s fully recovered and can drive, plus walk around, which apparently would also be a problem. But it makes hubby happy, so I make it happen. And our visitor’s a pleasant guy. I’ll want to hear his European impressions of President Trump.

He’s emailed us some stuff that indicates Trump is a total laughing stock outside the US. Along with our country for having a system that put him in office, contrary to the popular vote in contradiction of our vaunted democracy, and that retains him in office.

    LOL WHO CARES!

Florida has been ranked rock-bottom in a list of American states, prompting a light-hearted backlash from local media.

The Sunshine State was beneath all 49 other states when rated by a lifestyle website on 'everything'.

Included in the assessment was the states' 'contributions to America', 'inventions', 'food/drink', 'productive famous people' and 'unique physical beauty'
Florida rated the worst American state because its 'awfulness resume is so staggeringly impressive'

Isn't America a republic and not a democracy like Australia, and Mother England?

LOL WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR PREJUDICE?

This wasn’t a referendum on Florida. I can say equal or worse things about other US States, where I’ve had the great misfortune to be assigned during my long Army career.

This guy is coming here because he’s our friend, and because South Florida is a warm getaway from a cold European winter. Just like thousands of other Europeans do this time of year, because we have the weather. Your dubious stats mean nothing to them. We’ve also got ocean beaches, the Keys, the Everglades, and the Orlando mega-theme parks.

Enough to keep tourism our biggest business. I guess the rest of the US and the world are wrong, except you.

I've been to Florida and you can have it!
There're only big swamp creatures in florida now.

California and Hawaii are far better.
PS. Perhaps you could stop injecting progressive-brain dead identity politics in everything you say around here????? We might even respond to more of your posts. Even if they are about vacuum cleaners that don't suck!

Europeans don’t know what’s good for themselves, never mind us.

Europe is a dying continent.....with birth rates below 2.0 in every country, plus numerous terrorist attacks and rising crime and rapes by people they’re forced to import to clean up after them.

Florida along with Louisiana are both mostly low laying, flat, boring swamplands.

How come he can ride a bike but not drive a car? That sounds totally fishy to me. Why can't he use the folding bike? Tell your hubby that if the cannons ale gets stolen it will dampen the friendship and it's not worth that.

If the guest is polite he would graciously offer to use the inexpensive bike or be clear that he will gladly replace it if something happens to it.

We’ll have some answers when he arrives tomorrow night. I’ve not communicated directly with him at all about this, just what I’m told. Apparently he had a hard cast which just came off, but now may be wearing a soft boot. How he could pedal a bike with that but not operate a car does puzzle me, too.

Nor do I understand why he can’t wait before traveling. Perhaps he’s on a deadline for the end of medical leave from work, or has other plans for this Spring, I dunno.

He’s a big Dutchman, about 6’2”, which is the recommended size limit for this 20-inch-wheel folding bike. Riding it he’d probably look like a trained bear on a little circus bike. Whereas I’m struggling to remain near 5’8”, so it’s just my size. And that new bike listed for $2100, not including some accessories I also got for it.

Plus the larger Cannondale is no longer in production, one of the last touring bikes that was available in the US. And made in the USA, too, a rarity these days. With imported plastic fenders I got for city use that came from Germany, that exactly match the frame paint scheme. The welded aluminum frame is a flawless work of art, looking like it was sculpted from a single block of metal. Therefore I don’t want either bike to be lost or damaged.

I'll evaluate the situation when he arrives tomorrow night. I had already considered the possiblity of a rental bike. We even have automated outdoor bike rental stations here, that he can pay for himself. I'll drive him to one.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he the guy whom you and your partner were complaining about a few years ago on this forum, due to his rude behavior while he was staying with you? Apparently he broke a clock in your bedroom while mutzing with the battery, and didn't even mention it to you. I believe you stated that you were relieved when his visit finally came to an end. Or am I confusing him with someone else ?

    art_deco saidBut he’s the husband’s friend.

A person married to a man can correctly refer to that man as their husband.

You are not married to your roommate. He is NOT your husband.y

Stop trying to mislead people into thinking you are married.

Before gay marriage was a legal thing, it was common place for one to call ones boyfriend husband.
Well gay marriage is a thing now in America, Australia too.
Thus us homos, and bisexuals now have the right to marry our SSP.
Because it tiss now a misrepresentation of the trurh, for one to call one's boyfriend husband.
Because unlike before SSM, it can now mislead people to think one is Infact married.
Deco has said he hates the term partner, as it can mislead people to think business partner.
Yet Deco has used partner a number of times, over recent times.
Nor is Deco gay. His simply a bisexual, ,who's made a lifestyel change, to live as a gay man, instead of being seen as a breeding, married hetrosexual.

Sorry I’ve ignored this thread for a while. As I have with most online activity, been so busy with his visit.

You are correct, same guy. Great memory you have! I’m surprised he traveled here at all. He’s had 2 heart attacks in the last few months, his last requiring heart bypass surgery. Also had an unrelated emergency apentectomy. Then he broke his foot, in a hard cast for 6 weeks, just prior to coming here.

And since arriving here he’s had a constant cough. Like every 15 seconds. When we go to restaurants or other public places people stare at us, because of the current US flu scare.

He claims it’s not contagious, and he rarely covers his mouth. My husband better not acquire one, too, or I’ll directly email him that I never want to see him here again. I asked him why he didn’t wait, instead getting on a plane just days after his cast came off. He says it’s nothing, but it’s damn annoying to be driving in a confined car with him while he’s hacking loudly the whole time, his face uncovered.

Speaking of a car, he finally rented one. Despite what he said about not being able to drive, I think the real reason he wanted my bike was to avoid a car rental for his full 2 weeks here. Yes, despite what I was told, the day of his arrival he said he was actually here for 2 weeks, not 1. And BTW, he chipped up the paint on my bike nicely.

And then our new Keurig coffee maker, that I got at Christmas... He refuses to shut it off, leaves it on heating all day. Says he wants it ready whenever he’d like some coffee, apparently not understanding that a Keurig single-cup ALWAYS heats instantly. Which he drinks all day long, using up all our coffee, that would have served us for a month or more.

He asked us when we’ll buy more, and we told him the places (that he already knows) where he can buy his own, so he can “choose the kind you like.” He hasn’t.

And yes, he took down my wall clock again and removed the battery, because he says the ticking is too loud (he must have bats’ ears). He also unplugged our office printer (the office doubles as our guest room), because he doesn’t like the green ON light. We discovered that when we tried to print from the desktop in another room and got an error message. So I had to wait until he’d gone out to turn the printer back on.

We’ve both lost patience with him. I think if I express a strong preference that we not host him again I won’t get an argument next time.
